Recognizing the demand by businesses for safety professionals and occupational safety and health education, the United Parcel Service (UPS) Foundation presented a $25,000 donation today to the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation for professional safety student scholarships. UPS corporate health and safety manager Keith Jones, of Atlanta, GA, presented the check to ASSE Foundation trustee Lawrence Oldendorf, of Burbank, IL, this afternoon at ASSE's headquarters in Des Plaines.

"UPS is proud to support the ASSE Foundation in its efforts to provide occupational safety and health scholarships to students throughout the country," said Jones. "With this donation we aspire to help the Foundation with its mission of supporting theadvancement of the safety profession and protecting the safety and health of all Americans."

UPS has remained a dedicated supporter of the ASSE Foundation, providing funds this year for two junior and two senior undergraduate scholarships, in addition to establishing the ASSEF UPS Diversity Scholarship Program for minority students in the occupational safety, health and environment field. Since 1996 the UPS Foundation has donated a total of $121,250 to the ASSE Foundation, providing funds for 23 occupational safety and health scholarships.

Applications for the ASSEF UPS Diversity Scholarships are available on-line at www.asse.org/foundat.htm. The deadline for applying for this scholarship is April 15. Applicants must be from a minority, ethnic or racial group, be an ASSE student member and U.S. citizen, and have a GPA of 3.25/4.0. Two diversity scholarships will be offered this year.

Funding for the Foundation comes from corporations and voluntary donations from ASSE members - individual and through chapters countrywide.
