DES PLAINES, IL (August 10, 2005) — Arizona students pursuing an occupational safety, health and environmental degree can apply for a new college scholarship through the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation and the Phoenix-based ASSE Arizona Chapter.
The Arizona Chapter recently donated $23,000 to the ASSE Foundation to establish this scholarship for occupational safety, health and environmental undergraduates and graduates in the state of Arizona. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded each year. The chapter consists of members throughout Coconino, Gila, La Paz, Maricopa, Mohave, Yavapai and Yuma counties.
ASSE Arizona Chapter Past President Michael J. Cook, CSP, of Phoenix, said, "Our chapter members look forward to awarding this scholarship to Arizona students pursuing a career in the safety profession. This scholarship will aid future professionals focusing on helping reduce workplace injuries and illnesses."
Eligible applicants must be an ASSE student member enrolled in an occupational safety, health and environment degree program. Undergraduates must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 out of 4.0, are enrolled in at least twelve semester hours, and have completed 60 semester hours. Graduates must have a 3.5 GPA and have at least 9 graduate credits in progress. Special consideration will be given to student members with an Arizona address or those that live within ASSE Region II; Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. Scholarship applications and guidelines will be posted at www.asse.org/foundat.htm by September 1, 2005. The deadline for submitting applications is December 1, 2005.
