DES PLAINES, IL (August 8, 2005) — Thanks to the combined efforts of American Society of Safety Engineers' (ASSE) members throughout the U.S., the ASSE Foundation recently raised $110,580 for occupational safety, health and environmental (SH&E) scholarships, research and education during the annual ASSE Professional Development Conference in New Orleans.
Among the many contributions, the Beaumont, Texas-based Sabine Neches Chapter of ASSE donated $2,860 to the Foundation and the Houston-based Gulf Coast Chapter donated $17,700, which will help fund the Gulf Coast Past President's Fund Scholarship. Two scholarships of $1,000 each will be made available for students through this program.
The New York City-based Metropolitan Chapter donated $1,300 to the Foundation, while the Long Island, Empire State Area, Rochester-based Genesee Valley and Syracuse-based Central New York chapters donated a total of $1,000. The Northeastern Illinois Chapter of ASSE contributed $2,500 for scholarships to northwest suburban Chicago students, and the southwest Chicago-based Three Rivers Chapter and the Greater Chicago Chapter each donated $500 to the ASSE Foundation.
Comprised of chapters throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, ASSE Region IV donated $2,000 for the John Fleming Scholarship and an additional $1,000 for the Region IV Edwin P. Granberry Scholarship for students residing in Region IV of ASSE. In addition to a $500 from the Miami-based South Florida Chapter, the Saint Petersburg-based West Florida Chapter donated $7,500 to establish a new scholarship for its chapter members.
Through a $23,000 donation, the Phoenix-based Arizona Chapter of ASSE established a new Foundation scholarship for SH&E students residing in Arizona. The Nashville-based Middle Tennessee Chapter also established a new scholarship through a $40,700 donation to the ASSE Foundation.
Donations of $1,000 were presented by California's Bakersfield Chapter, the Denver-based Colorado Chapter, and the Gary, Indiana-based Greater Calumet Chapter. The Greater Boston Chapter presented $1,000 for its chapter leadership scholarship and the Worcester County Chapter donated $200 to the Foundation. The Baltimore, Maryland-based Chesapeake Chapter contributed $3,000 to be used for the James P. Kohn Memorial Scholarship and to help students attend future safety conferences. Funds were also donated from the Anchorage-based Alaska Chapter, the Columbia-based South Carolina Chapter, the Columbus-based Central Ohio Chapter, and from individual member contributions.
Up to $90,000 in SH&E scholarships will be awarded in 2005/2006 through the ASSE Foundation. Scholarship applications and guidelines will be posted by September 1, 2005, and the deadline for scholarship submissions is December 1, 2005. Eligible applicants must be an ASSE student member enrolled in an occupational safety, health and environment degree program or a related field. Also, undergraduates must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 out of 4.0, are enrolled in 12 or more semester hours, and have completed at least 60 semester hours. Graduates must have a GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0, are currently enrolled in nine or more semester hours, and have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0.
