DES PLAINES, IL (July 7, 2005) — The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation recently announced the recipients of the fourth annual Delmar E. Tally Professional Development Grants, which aid ASSE members seeking to enhance their occupational safety and health skills. The recipients include James Burke of Elkton, VA ; Eric Briesemeister of Marion, IA; Christopher Corea of Galloway, NJ ; Christina Hagen of Eagan, MN ; Wendy Moore of Greenville, NC; Jack Moorman of Virginia Beach, VA; and Rani Muhdi of Auburn, AL. Several of the grants will cover the costs for study aids, preparation courses and examination fees for members pursuing the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and Associate Safety Professional (ASP) designations.
Established by ASSE members Del and Betty Tally of Lockhart, TX, the Delmar E. Tally Professional Development Grant Fund assists ASSE members in advancing careers through occupational safety, health and environmental certification study courses, professional development seminars and educational conferences. Del Tally, P.E., CSP, served as 1985-1986 ASSE national president and past Foundation Chair. Betty Tally, CSP, CHST, OHST, previously served as president of ASSE's Central Texas Chapter.
A member of the ASSE Colonial Virginia Chapter, James Burke is safety director for E.A. Breeden Inc., an industrial and facility maintenance firm in Elkton, VA. Burke received a $500 grant to help cover industrial hygiene courses at the National Labor College - George Meany Campus in Silver Spring, MD.
Eric Briesemeister, safety manager for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, IA, received a $600 grant to attend review courses to help prepare for the ASP certification examination. A member of the ASSE Northeast Iowa Chapter, Briesemeister received his Bachelor of Science degree and also an M.S. in Environmental Engineering both from Iowa State University, Ames.
Serving as risk consultant-state compliance for St. Paul Travelers Insurance Co., Christina Hagen is working towards her ASP and CSP designations. A member of the Minneapolis-based Northwest Chapter, Hagen received $700 through the Tally grants. She received a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and an M.S. in Environmental Health and Safety both from the University of Minnesota, Duluth.
A member of the Birmingham-based ASSE Alabama Chapter, Rani Muhdi, is a graduate teaching and research assistant at Auburn University, Auburn, AL. He received $500 to help pursue off-campus courses in fire evacuation, which relates to his current research projects. Muhdi is pursuing a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Auburn University. He received a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Jordan, Amman, and an M.S. in Engineering Technology from East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN.
Receiving $500 to help cover her ASP examination and study materials, Wendy Moore is a member of the Greenville-based Eastern Carolina Chapter. She serves as environmental health and safety coordinator for Purolator Air Filtration in Kenly, NC. Moore received a B.S. in Manufacturing Engineering Technology from Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, NC, and an M.S. in Occupational Safety from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC.
Jack Moorman, district safety manager at Home Depot in Virginia Beach, VA, is a member of the Norfolk-based Greater Tidewater Chapter. He received $700 to help take preparation courses for the ASP and CSP designations. Moorman received a B.S. in Industrial Technologies with an emphasis in Environmental Protection and Safety from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA.
A safety specialist for Hi-Tec Systems Inc. in Galloway, NJ, Christopher Corea received $600 to take preparation courses for the ASP and CSP examinations. He graduated from Millersville University, PA.
