ASSE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2005 SAFETY SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

     DES PLAINES, IL (April 14, 2005) — Aiding college students as they pursue a career in safety, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation today announced the 28 recipients of its occupational safety, health and environmental (SH&E) scholarships.

Through the support of corporations, members and individuals, the ASSE Foundation is awarding over $80,000 in scholarships this year for undergraduates and graduates. The scholarships will be presented during ASSE's annual Professional Development Conference and Exposition this June at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans , LA

The new Washington Group International Safety Scholarship, a $3,500 award for students with an emphasis in construction safety, will be awarded to Megan Rochowiak, Safety and Health Management undergraduate at Central Washington University , Ellensburg , WA . Also focusing on construction safety students, the Bechtel Foundation Scholarship for Safety and Health recipient is Amy Brown, Safety Studies undergraduate at Keene State College, Keene , NH . Brown will receive a $5,000 scholarship.

The DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund Scholarship, a $2,000 award, will be presented to David Sousa, Safety Technology undergraduate at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester , NY . The Marsh Risk Consulting Scholarship recipient is Lauren Robbins, Occupational Safety and Health undergraduate at Murray State University , Murray , KY , and she will receive a $5,000 award. Seong Hwang, Safety Management undergraduate at Indiana State University , Terre Haute , IN , will receive the Liberty Mutual Scholarship, a $3,000 award.

The United Parcel Service (UPS) Diversity Scholarship recipients will be awarded to Amber Magdaleno, Industrial Safety undergraduate at the University of Central Oklahoma , Edmond , OK ; and Chakalon Dial, Safety Management undergraduate at Indiana State University , Terre Haute , IN. In addition, UPS Scholarship will be awarded to Melissa Burcham, Occupational Safety and Health undergraduate at Murray State University ; Katie Jordan, Safety Studies undergraduate at Keene State College; Marie Kopko, Safety Sciences undergraduate at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Indiana, PA; David Zerfas, Occupational Safety and Health Management undergraduate at Grand Valley State University , Allendale , MI. Each of the UPS scholarship recipients will receive a $5,250 award.

The Ford Motor Company Scholarship Program for women in safety awarded four scholarships of $3,450 each to Catherine Collert, Occupational Safety and Health undergraduate at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Durant, OK; Rochelle Gaouette, Safety Studies undergraduate at Keene State College; Courtney Veach, Safety Management undergraduate at Indiana State University; and Kendra Hatcher, Safety Management graduate at West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV.

Christopher Skipper, Occupational Safety and Environmental Health undergraduate at Millersville University , Millersville , PA , will receive the America Responds Memorial Scholarship, a $1,000 scholarship honoring the ASSE members lost in the September 2001 attacks. The $1,000 Gulf Coast Past President's Scholarship will be awarded to Lauren Ahiablame, Occupational Safety and Health undergraduate at North Carolina A& T State University , Greensboro , NC.

Named in honor of a dedicated ASSE Foundation volunteer, the Marcella Thompson Distinguished Service Award Scholarship, a $2,000 award, will be presented to Jay Braffett, Occupational Safety and Health undergraduate at Southeastern Oklahoma State University . The recipient of the $2,500 Northeastern Illinois Chapter Scholarship is Kirk Jewell, Safety and Health Protection undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Covering SH&E graduate studies, the Thompson Scholarship for Women in Safety Program will award $1,000 to Ilona Szigethy, Occupational Safety Management graduate at Indiana State University . Established in memory of North Carolina safety educator James P. Kohn, Ed.D., CSP, CIH, the James P. Kohn Memorial Scholarship, a $2,000 award, will be presented to Ephraim Massawe, graduate in Work Environment at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.

The ASSE Foundation also offers several local and regional scholarships, each a $1,000 award for SH&E students. The new Greater Boston Chapter Leadership Award Scholarship, for students residing in the New England area, will be awarded to Lu Yuan, Occupational Ergonomics graduate at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. Focusing on SH&E undergraduates at Murray State University and Indiana State University , the first-ever Warren K. Brown Scholarship recipient is Dennis Mendenhall, Safety Management undergraduate at Indiana State University . The Greater Baton Rouge Chapter - Don Jones Excellence in Safety Scholarship recipient is Cody Prince, Occupational Safety and Health undergraduate at Southeastern Oklahoma State University . The Georgia Chapter of ASSE Annual Scholarship recipient is Kimberly Ewert, Industrial Safety and Environmental Compliance undergraduate at Georgia Southern University, Statesboro , GA. For students residing in ASSE Region II; Arizona , Colorado , Idaho , Montana , Nevada , New Mexico , Utah and Wyoming , the Gold Country Section & Region II Scholarship will be presented to Andrew Merryweather, Ergonomics and Safety graduate at the University of Utah , Salt

Lake City , UT. Geared toward students in Idaho and elsewhere in ASSE Region II, the Scott Dominguez - Craters of the Moon Chapter Scholarship recipient is Ian Percy, undergraduate in Environmental Health from Boise State University , Boise , ID. Claudia Escobar, Industrial and Systems Engineering graduate at Auburn University , Auburn , AL , will receive the Region IV - Edwin P. Granberry Scholarship for students residing in Alabama , Florida , Georgia , Louisiana , Mississippi , Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Eligible applicants must be an ASSE student member enrolled in an occupational safety, health and environment degree program or a related field. Also, undergraduates must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 out of 4.0, are enrolled in 12 or more semester hours, and have completed at least 60 semester hours. Graduates must have a GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0, are currently enrolled in nine or more semester hours, and have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0. Students submit one application to be considered for the various SH&E scholarships, and applications for next year's scholarships will be available this fall at www.asse.org/foundat.htm.
