WASHINGTON GROUP INTERNATIONAL EXTENDS COMMITMENT TO SAFETY THROUGH NEW ASSE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

     DES PLAINES, IL (February 15, 2005) - Providing funds to benefit construction safety and health students, the American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation (ASSEF) today established the new Washington Group International Safety Scholarship program, thanks to the $5,500 contribution from Washington Group International, Inc.

ASSE Foundation Chair Kennith D. Brock, CSP, said, “We are proud of Washington Group International’s commitment to safety education and for creating this new scholarship to benefit future safety and health professionals in the construction industry.”

The Washington Group International Safety Scholarship program will annually award a $3,500 scholarship to an undergraduate pursuing a safety and health degree, with an emphasis in construction. Applicants must be an ASSE student member, have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 out of 4.0, are currently enrolled in 12 or more semester hours, and have completed at least 60 semester hours. Special consideration will be given to students attending Central Missouri State University, Central Washington University, Colorado State University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Marshall University, Millersville University, Montana Tech of the University of Montana, Murray State University, Oakland University, Pennsylvania State University, Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, University of Alabama-Birmingham and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Students can submit their applications for scholarships to the ASSE Foundation from September through December each year.

Washington Group vice president of environmental safety and health Brad Giles, P.E., CSP, of Boise, ID, and ASSE professional member, said, “We are pleased to aid the ASSE Foundation in providing funds to students pursuing a degree in construction safety and health, and we look forward to awarding the first scholarship this June at ASSE’s annual conference in New Orleans.”
