FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR SAFETY RESEARCH DES PLAINES, IL ( October 21, 2004) – Encouraging research in occupational safety to prevent workplace injuries, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation recently announced the 2005 Liberty Mutual Safety Research Fellowship Program. This program provides funding for two fellows to conduct workplace safety research this summer at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety in Hopkinton, MA. The fellowship program promotes safety research, expands upon current safety practices, and creates the groundwork for fellows to pursue safety research. Two fellows will spend four to six weeks at the Institute, having access to current research projects, equipment and research scientists onsite. Fellows will receive a stipend from the ASSE Foundation to cover research expenses and they will write an article for an ASSE publication; Professional Safety or the ASSE Foundation's Advocate . “The Liberty Mutual Research Institute is proud to continue funding much needed research in occupational safety through this fellowship program,” said Tom Leamon, director of the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety. “Several fellowships have been conducted at our facility over the years thanks to this program and the ASSE Foundation, and we once again look forward to partnering with the upcoming fellows in preventing workplace injuries.” Applicants must be U.S. citizens and possess a Ph.D. degree or be working towards a master's or Ph.D. degree. ASSE members and applicants enrolled or holding appointments in an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited safety program will be given special consideration.
