SAFETY, HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FROM AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS FOUNDATION

     DES PLAINES, IL (August 30, 2004) – The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation today announced the scholarships available for college students working towards a safety, health and environmental (SH&E) degree or a related field. With nearly $60,000 available in scholarships, the ASSE Foundation offers scholarships for graduates and undergraduates, ranging from general occupational safety and health to construction safety, diversity, university-specific and regional-based awards.

The ASSE Foundation's 2004-2005 scholarships are for students pursuing a degree in occupational safety and health, safety engineering, safety management, occupational health nursing, occupational medicine, risk management, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, fire safety, environmental safety, environmental health or other safety-related fields. Applicants must be a student member of ASSE, unless otherwise specified. Undergraduates must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 out of 4.0, are currently enrolled in 12 or more semester hours, and have completed at least 60 semester hours. Graduates must have a GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0, are currently enrolled in nine or more semester hours, and have an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0. Students submit one application to be considered for the various scholarships.

This year the ASSE Foundation offers two new local $1,000 scholarships; the Greater Boston Chapter Leadership Award Scholarship for safety and health graduates and undergraduates residing in the New England area, and the Warren K. Brown Scholarship for SH&E undergraduates at Murray State University, Murray, KY, or Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN.

The ASSE Foundation undergraduate scholarships include the Liberty Mutual Scholarship for SH&E students and the Bechtel Foundation Scholarship for Safety and Health for students with an emphasis in construction safety. Both programs will each award a $3,000 scholarship. The Marsh Risk Consulting Scholarship Program will award a $5,000 undergraduate scholarship and the United Parcel Service (UPS) Foundation Scholarship Program will award various undergraduate and diversity scholarships, ranging from $4,000 to $6,000. The ASSE Foundation will award several other undergraduate scholarships including a $1,000 Gulf Coast Past Presidents Scholarship for part-time or full-time safety undergraduates, a $1,000 America Responds

Memorial Scholarship, which honors the ASSE members lost in the September 2001 attacks, and a $2,000 Marcella Thompson Distinguished Service Award Scholarship.

Honoring a dedicated safety educator and ASSE member who passed away in 1999, the James P. Kohn Memorial Scholarship program will award one $2,000 scholarship to a student pursuing a graduate degree in occupational safety and health. The Thompson Scholarship for Women in Safety is a $1,000 graduate SH&E scholarship available for female ASSE members and non-members. There are also ASSE chapter and regional scholarships available for both graduates and undergraduates, which includes the $2,500 Northeastern Illinois Chapter Scholarship for students in northeastern Illinois and Wisconsin, and the $1,000 Gold Country Section & Region II Scholarship for students residing in ASSE Region II; Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. The second annual Scott Dominguez – Craters of the Moon Chapter Scholarship fund, named in honor of an injured worker from Idaho, will also offer a $1,000 scholarship to a part-time or full-time student residing in Idaho or elsewhere in Region II.

In addition, geographical-based undergraduate scholarships include the Georgia Chapter of ASSE Annual Scholarship for students in Georgia, the Greater Baton Rouge Chapter – Don Jones Excellence in Safety Scholarship for SH&E students at Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU), Hammond, LA, and the Region IV – Edwin P. Granberry Jr. Scholarship for students residing in ASSE Region IV; Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These scholarships each offer a $1,000 award.

The Foundation is accepting scholarship applications from now until December 10, 2004. The winners will be posted on the Foundation's website on April 1, 2005.
