PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANTS FROM ASSE FOUNDATION DES PLAINES, IL (May 10, 2004) -- Helping professionals advance their occupational safety and health skills, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation today announced the recipients of the third annual Delmar E. Tally Professional Development Grant; Jean Balough of Ames, IA; Shanna Caviness of Maiden, NC; A.J. DeRose of Noblesville, IN; Matthew Kromrie of Menomonie, WI; and Cheryl Urie of Duluth, MN. Established by ASSE members Del and Betty Tally, the Delmar E. Tally Professional Development Grant Fund is awarding $3,500 in grants this year to ASSE members seeking to enhance their careers through occupational safety, health and environmental certification study courses, professional development seminars and educational conferences. The grants will be presented this June during ASSE's annual Professional Development Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas, NV. ASSE Hawkeye Chapter member Jean Balough of Ames, IA, plans to use her $400 professional development grant to assist with costs in taking the Certified Healthcare Safety Professional Exam. She is a safety coordinator at Mercy Medical Center, and has a B.S. in Industrial Technology and an A.S. in Nursing. A member of ASSE's Tarheel Chapter, Shanna Caviness of Maiden, NC, received a $500 grant for Certified Safety Professional (CSP) study courses to help obtain the CSP designation. She serves as a risk control consultant at AdvanTech Solutions, and received a B.S. in Environmental Health from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC. Caviness is an Accredited Office Ergonomics Specialist, Registered Professional Industrial Hygienist, and she also holds certification in Hazardous Materials Response. A.J. DeRose of Noblesville, IN, plans to use his $1,000 grant for confined space training courses to enhance his workplace safety skills. A member of ASSE's Central Indiana Chapter, he has 12 years experience in safety, currently serving as health and safety supervisor at DaimlerChrysler Corporation. Matthew Kromrie received a $1,000 grant to attend courses to complete the Certificate in Safety Management through ASSE. A member of ASSE's Northwest Chapter, he serves as director of safety at Trac Incorporated in Menomonie, WI. Also a member of the Northwest Chapter of ASSE, Cheryl Urie of Duluth, MN, received a $600 grant to attend Associate Safety Professional (ASP) review courses to increase her professional designations. She serves as a senior safety investigator for the State of Minnesota – Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Urie has a B.S. in Biology and Health Education and an M.S. in Industrial Safety and Hygiene. The Professional Development Grant Fund's supporters are Betty Tally, CSP, CHST, OHST, who previously served as president of ASSE's Central Texas Chapter, and Del Tally, P.E., CSP, who served as 1985-1986 ASSE national president and past Foundation Chair. In 1997, Del received ASSE's highest honor, Society Fellow, recognizing his dedication and support of the safety profession.
