AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS FOUNDATION
ANNOUNCES 2004 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

DES PLAINES, IL (April 27, 2004) -- Continuing its support of workplace safety through education, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation today announced the 23 recipients of its safety, health and environmental scholarships. The occupational safety, health and environmental scholarships ranged from corporate, regional, local and memorial scholarships for undergraduates and graduates.

The newly established Becthel Foundation Scholarship Program for Safety and Health awarded its first-ever construction safety scholarship to David Schell, Occupational Safety and Health undergraduate at Murray State University, Murray, KY. Recently endowed by the Liberty Mutual Group Fund, the first-ever Liberty Mutual Scholarship recipient is Darren Alexander, Safety and Environmental Management undergraduate at Northeastern State University, Tahlequah, OK. Both recipients will each receive $3,000 from the scholarship programs.

The two United Parcel Service (UPS) Diversity Scholarship recipients are Wendy Kue, Industrial Health and Safety undergraduate at Oakland University, Rochester, MI; and Yashira Reveron, Safety Science undergraduate at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, FL. The four UPS Scholarship recipients are Natalie Berger, Safety undergraduate at Illinois State University, Normal, IL; Jill Mehaulic, Safety and Environmental Engineering Technology undergraduate at Fairmont State College, Fairmont, WV; Monika Wawrzak, Occupational Safety and Environmental Health undergraduate at Millersville University, Millersville, PA; and Richard Rydza, Safety Technology undergraduate at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY. Each of the UPS Scholarship recipients will receive a $5,250 award.

The recipient of the Marsh Risk Consulting Scholarship, a $5,000 award, is Robert Spiers, Occupational Safety and Health undergraduate at Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI.

The four Ford Motor Company Scholarship recipients are Joyce Danielsen-Ely, Safety and Health Management undergraduate at Central Washington University, Ellensburg, WA; Brandy Douglas, Environmental Health and Safety Management undergraduate at Ferris State University, Big Rapids, MI; Ruby Klement, Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater; and Rhonda Munoz, Occupational Safety Management graduate at Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, MO. Each recipient of the Ford Motor Company Scholarship will receive a $3,375 award, which is for women pursing a degree in occupational safety, health and the environment.

Mark Kreisher, Occupational Safety and Environmental Health and Technology Education undergraduate at Millersville University, Millersville, PA, received the $2,000 Edwin P. Granberry Distinguished Service Award Scholarship, named in honor of a dedicated ASSE Foundation volunteer.

Honoring the ASSE members lost in the September 2001 attacks, the America Responds Memorial Scholarship recipient is Eric Kerns, Safety Technology undergraduate at Marshall University, Huntington, WV. The Thompson Scholarship for Women in Safety recipient is Melanie Kelly, Occupational and Industrial Hygiene graduate at the University of Texas, School of Public Health, Houston, TX. Joseph Moore, Business and Occupational Safety and Health undergraduate at Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond, LA, received the Greater Baton Rouge Chapter - Don Jones Excellence in Safety Scholarship, and Kaila Benton-Vitz, Safety Sciences undergraduate at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Indiana, PA, received the Gulf Coast Past Presidents' Scholarship. Matthew Wright Reading, graduate in Ergonomics and Safety from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, received the first-ever Scott Dominguez - Craters of the Moon Chapter Scholarship. Lucas Paugh, Occupational Safety and Health undergraduate at Montana Tech, Butte, MT, is the recipient of the Gold Country Section and Region II Scholarship. Aaron Deerey, Safety Sciences undergraduate at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, FL, will receive the Region IV - Edwin P. Granberry Scholarship. All seven recipients will each receive $1,000 from the ASSE Foundation scholarship program.

The recipient of the $2,500 Northeastern Illinois Chapter Scholarship is Joy Schnackenbeck, Industrial Hygiene graduate at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Jaesin Sa, graduate in Safety at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, will receive the James P. Kohn Memorial Scholarship, a $2,000 grant established in memory of North Carolina safety educator James P. Kohn, Ed.D., CSP, CIH.

The scholarships will be awarded to the students during ASSE's annual Professional Development Conference and Exposition June 7-10 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. Eligible applicants must be an ASSE student member enrolled in an occupational safety, health and environment degree program. Also, undergraduates must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 out of 4.0, are enrolled in at least twelve semester hours, and have completed 60 semester hours. Graduates must have a GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0, are enrolled in at least nine semester hours, and have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0.
