HONGWEI HSIAO SELECTED TO AMERICAN SOCIETY OF
SAFETY ENGINEERS FOUNDATION RESEARCH COMMITTEE

DES PLAINES, IL (April 20, 2004) -- The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation today named a new member to its research committee; Hongwei Hsiao, Ph.D., Protective Technology Branch Chief of the Division of Safety Research at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

Dr. Hsiao's appointment represents a step forward for ASSE's partnership with NIOSH, which in part, is aimed at improving communications and cooperation in the safety research efforts of ASSE and NIOSH. The partnership between ASSE and NIOSH was established in 2003.

In his two-year term as a member of the ASSE Foundation research committee, Dr. Hsiao will assist with the selection of workplace safety research projects. The six-member committee evaluates research proposals in the safety and health field, annually offering one research grant from the Foundation. The committee also helps determine the two ASSE Foundation/Liberty Mutual Research Fellowships to be conducted annually at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety.

Dr. Hsiao manages seven laboratories and supervises thirty research and technical staff in the Division of Safety Research at NIOSH's facility in Morgantown, WV. The Division of Safety Research is NIOSH's primary traumatic occupational injury research program, covering surveillance, analytic epidemiology, protective technology, safety engineering and health communication.

Dr. Hsiao received a B.S.E. degree from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan, an M.A. degree from Cornell University, NY, and M.S.E. & Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. He serves as an advisor for several national and international injury-prevention fellowship programs. Dr. Hsiao is a member of the International Fall Protection Society, Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, American Society of Biomechanics, Society of Automotive Engineers, and the U.S. Technical Advisory Group for personal equipment for protection against falls.
