UPS SUPPORTS WORKPLACE SAFETY, DIVERSITY THROUGH
AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS
DES PLAINES, IL (February
23, 2004) -- Helping prevent
workplace fatalities and injuries through its support of safety and health
education, the Atlanta, Georgia-based United Parcel Service (UPS) Foundation
today donated $35,000 to the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE)
Foundation for occupational safety and diversity scholarships.
ASSE Foundation Chair Karl Jacobson, said, "We applaud the UPS Foundation
for its outstanding support of the ASSE Foundation and for ushering in
the next generation of students to the safety and health profession; a
profession dedicated to preventing occupational injuries and developing
a safer workplace for all."
Through the UPS Foundation donation, two diversity scholarships and four
undergraduate scholarships will be awarded this year to college juniors
and seniors pursuing an occupational safety and health degree. Recipients
will each receive a $5,250 scholarship, which will be awarded this June
during ASSE's annual Professional Development Conference in Las Vegas,
Nevada.
UPS Corporate Health and Safety Director Keith Jones, said, "UPS
values this opportunity to work with the ASSE Foundation in providing
aid to occupational safety and health students through the scholarship
program."
The UPS Foundation has donated nearly $200,000 to the ASSE Foundation
since 1996, providing funds for 31 occupational safety and health scholarships.
Four scholarships have also been awarded to minority students as part
of the UPS Diversity Program, established in 2002.
