CALIFORNIA, NORTH CAROLINA SAFETY PROFESSIONALS AWARDED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANTS

      DES PLAINES, IL (August 14, 2003) --The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation recently announced the recipients of the second annual Delmar E. Tally Professional Development Grant; Julian Mercer of Greensboro, NC, and Marti Stroup of Elk Grove, CA. The grants were awarded this past June during ASSE's annual conference in Denver, CO. Each year $1,000 is available for ASSE members to participate in occupational safety, health and environmental certification study courses, professional development seminars and educational conferences.

     Mercer is a safety intern at Alliance, a Rock-Tenn Company in Greensboro, NC. He plans to use the professional development grant for his college tuition, as he is pursuing an M.S. in Occupational Safety and Health from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Greensboro.

     A member since 1993, Stroup serves as safety, health and regulatory services manager for Associated General Contractors of California. She is working towards her Associate in Risk Management (ARM) certification, which the grant will help fund. Stroup previously served as a safety officer for the County of Sacramento for 11 years. She has served numerous offices on the ASSE Sacramento Chapter, including past chapter president.

     ASSE members Delmar E. Tally and Betty Tally of Austin, TX, recently donated $10,800 to endow the professional development grant fund. Del, P.E., CSP, served as 1985-1986 ASSE national president, past Foundation Chair, and recipient of ASSE's highest honor, Society Fellow in 1997. Betty, CSP, CHST, OHST, served as president of ASSE's Central Texas Chapter.

     Chartered in 1990, the ASSE Foundation is committed to ensuring the future of the occupational safety and health profession by providing financial resources to individuals and organizations. Funding for the Foundation comes from corporations and voluntary donations from ASSE members - individual and through chapters countrywide for applied safety research, scholarships, fellowships, internships and professional development. Grant applications will be available this September 1 and applications are due December 1, 2003.
