DES PLAINES, IL (July 14, 2003) --- The Columbia-based South Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) recently donated $1,000 to the ASSE Foundation's James P. Kohn Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund annually awards one $2,000 scholarship to a graduate student pursuing a degree in occupational safety, health and the environment. Kohn, Ed.D., CSP, CIH, served as ASSE's vice president of Region VI, which has members throughout D.C., Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

South Carolina Chapter past president Marshall Fowler of Chapin, SC, said, "Honoring the efforts of dedicated safety professional and educator James Kohn, this chapter donation will help support graduate students in safety and health."

Kohn, who passed away in 1999, dedicated much of his time to the safety profession, teaching academic safety programs for more than 12 years, working in the public utilities industry, and writing several books on occupational safety and health. He served as a professor of Industrial Technology at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as president of OccuSafe Service Corporation. An ASSE professional member, Kohn held several positions at the chapter, regional and national levels, including regional vice president, Professional and Educational Standards Committee member, and ASSE representative on the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology. He also received ASSE's Charles V. Culbertson Outstanding Volunteer Service Award in 1992 for his commitment to the Society.
