FOUNDATION AWARDS NEARLY $60,000 IN
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH SCHOLARSHIPS

      DES PLAINES, IL (May 06, 2003) --- The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) recently announced the 19 recipients of the ASSE Foundation scholarships for students pursuing a degree in occupational safety, health and the environment. Nearly $60,000 in scholarships will be awarded during ASSE's annual Professional Development Conference and Exposition June 22-25 at the Denver Convention Complex in Denver, CO.

      The four Ford Motor Company Scholarship recipients are Stacy M. Ruby, Industrial Health and Safety undergraduate at Oakland University, Rochester, MI; Michelle A. Salsgiver, Safety Sciences undergraduate at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, PA; Dusti L. Gauger, Industrial Safety undergraduate at University of Texas, Tyler; and Julie A. McQueen, Occupational Safety Management graduate at Indiana State University, Terre Haute. Each recipient of the Ford Motor Company Scholarship will receive a $3,375 award for women pursing a degree in occupational safety, health and the environment.

      The four United Parcel Service (UPS) Scholarship recipients are Tyson E. Frazier, Safety Studies undergraduate at Keene State College, NH; Kathryn M. Baird, Occupational Safety and Health undergraduate at Murray State University, KY; Jason W. Lundry, Occupational Safety and Health undergraduate at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Durant; and Bobbie J. Schaefer, Industrial Health and Safety undergraduate at Oakland University, Rochester, MI. The two UPS Diversity Scholarship recipients are Tommy R. Jones, Occupational Safety and Health undergraduate at Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI, and Carlos Garcia, Occupational Safety and Health Technology undergraduate at Jacksonville State University, AL. Each of the six UPS Scholarship recipients will receive a $5,250 award.

      The first recipient of the America Responds Memorial Scholarship, honoring the ASSE members lost in the September 2001 attacks, is Frank Disori, Occupational Safety and Environmental Hygiene undergraduate at Millersville University, PA. Jeffrey D. Shaw, Industrial Safety undergraduate at Southeastern Oklahoma State University received the Georgia Chapter of ASSE Annual Scholarship, and Stephen Turpin, Safety Studies undergraduate at Keene State College, received the Gulf Coast Past Presidents Scholarship. Jodi D. Quam, Environmental Health and Industrial Hygiene graduate from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, is the recipient of the Gold Country Section and Region II Scholarship. The Thompson Scholarship for Women in Safety recipient is Carolyn Murray, Industrial Hygiene and Safety graduate at West Virginia University, Morgantown. All five will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.

      The recipient of the Marsh Risk Consulting Scholarship, a $3,000 award, is Jeremy B. Morgan, Safety with Environmental Sciences undergraduate at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Rebecca Halley, Environmental Health and Safety undergraduate at Mount Hood Community College, Gresham, OR, will receive the $2,000 M. McGrath Distinguished Service Award Scholarship. The recipient of the $2,500 Northeastern Illinois Chapter Scholarship is Ryan W. Green, Occupational Safety and Environmental Health undergraduate at Millersville University. Shane R. Beer, Agricultural Systems Management graduate at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, will receive the James P. Kohn Memorial Scholarship, a $2,000 grant established in memory of North Carolina safety educator James P. Kohn, Ed.D., CSP, CIH.

      Eligible applicants must be an ASSE student member enrolled in an occupational safety, health and environment degree program. Also, undergraduates must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.25 out of 4.0 and take at least twelve semester hours, while graduates must have a GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0 and take at least nine semester hours.
