American Society of Safety Engineers Kicks Off 6th Annual Youth Job Safety Poster Contest
Des Plaines, IL (September 19, 2007) — Like they say in 3:10 to Yuma, "Draw Partner", the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) is urging its members' children to pick up their crayons and enter its 6th annual kids' "Safety-on-the-Job" poster contest which opens today. The contest is for ASSE members' children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and runs through Valentine's Day, February 14, 2008. The contest is open to children 5 – 14 with top prizes to be awarded to those in each of the five age groups that best illustrate being safe on the job.

ASSE members and chapters can also sponsor schools, community organizations or children from their workplace in the contest, which is aimed at educating children on the importance of safety and health at work and better acquainting them with the job their parents do as occupational safety, health and environmental practitioners.

Children in five age groups -- 1) ages 5-6; 2) ages 7-8; 3) ages 9-10; 4) ages 11-12; and 5) ages 13-14, are invited to create and submit posters no larger than 11 x 14 that best illustrate being safe at work. The first place winner in each age group receives a $1,000 savings bond, the second place winner receives a $500 savings bond and the third and fourth place winners receive a $200 savings bond. All entrants receive a prize and are invited, along with their families and all ASSE members, to attend the ASSE poster contest awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., Monday, May 5.

The poster contest winners will be announced the first week of March. The winning poster in each age group will be featured on the ASSE North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (NAOSH) 2008 poster distributed worldwide. NAOSH Week runs from May 4-10, 2008 and is a tool ASSE uses to promote the importance of occupational safety, health and the environment in everyone's lives. In addition, the posters are displayed in Washington, D.C. during NAOSH Week at the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). The Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) along with the ASSE President and a representative from the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) will introduce the poster contest winners at the national NAOSH kick-off at the DOL Monday, May 5, prior to the ASSE U.S. Capitol awards event. Additional ASSE events will be announced in the Spring of 2008. A listing of last year's activities can be found at www.asse.org/naosh07.

In 2007 ASSE and OSHA, through the NAOSH partnership, reached close to 20 million people and 135,000 businesses worldwide on the importance of workplace safety and through the images of ASSE members' children's posters. The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) is proud to sponsor the sixth annual ASSE kids' ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ poster contest for members' children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews as part of the annual North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. ASSE members and chapters can also sponsor schools or children from their workplace to enter the contest.

The poster contest begins today, September 19, 2007, and runs through Valentine's Day, February 14, 2008. Children in five age groups are invited to create and submit posters no larger than 11 x 14 that best illustrate being safe at work, to show an example of safety at work (check details below).

All entries must be postmarked by Thursday, February 14. The four winners in each of the five age groups will be announced a week later and the first-place winners in each age group's poster will be featured on the ASSE NAOSH 08 poster distributed worldwide.

An independent panel of judges will select the winning entries that best illustrate the theme ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ in their poster.

The entry form and contest rules follow. Please read and follow all the rules carefully so that all posters/drawings will be eligible. Before the children begin drawing, we urge you to talk to them about workplace safety and provide examples of what risks occupational safety, health and environmental professionals address every day on-the-job, and if possible, provide them with examples of workplace situations. POSTER CONTEST RULES

1. Entry is open to ASSE members' children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews between the ages of 5 and 14. Chapters and members can sponsor schools, and students from their communities, from their workplace, etc. There are five age categories with a first, second, third and fourth place winner from each age category which are: 1) ages 5-6; 2) ages 7-8; 3) ages 9-10; 4) ages 11-12; and, 5) ages 13-14. Children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews of ASSE employees may not enter.

2. The poster drawing must relate to the theme ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ and should illustrate an example of safety at work. As you know, the description of the workplace is wide-ranging -- it can be at an office, a manufacturing plant, on the road, in a plane, on a train, a ship, a dock, at home, on the football field, a store, fire or police department, construction sites, state capitols, parks, pools, schools, etc. Encourage your children to be creative.

3. The finished poster must be no larger than 11" x 14". Designs should be submitted on quality poster illustration board or heavy paper. Crayons, magic markers or color pencils only should be used.

4. Only one entry per child will be allowed. Parents/sponsors are limited to verbal assistance only. All drawings must be an individual effort and be free-hand originals. No traced pictures please.

5. Each poster must have the contestants name, age, address, telephone number, e-mail address if available, and sponsoring ASSE member name and member number clearly printed on the entry form and attached to the back of the poster to be eligible. Also, add the name of the school they attend and their hobbies.

6. All entries must be postmarked by Thursday, February 14, 2008. All entries become the property of ASSE once submitted. However, we return all entries to the entrants by the end of the summer. Send posters to:

7. Criteria for judging---creativity and how well the poster expresses the contest theme ‘Safety-on-the-Job.’

8. Winning posters will be announced in March 2008. A panel of independent judges will choose the winners.
