Houston Family Makes Significant Contribution to American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation's Hispanic Safety Scholarship & Professional Development Grant
|Des Plaines, IL (May 15, 2007) — Rixio and Alejandra Medina, of Houston, today donated another $20,000 to the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation to establish a second $2,000 scholarship under the Medina Scholarship for Hispanics in Safety and endow the professional development grant recently established.
Rixio Medina, CSP, is an ASSE member. The Medinas have made several contributions to the ASSE Foundation over the years towards the Medina Scholarship for Hispanics in Safety and for the Medina Professional Development Grant to help ASSE members enhance their career. In response to the Medina's Foundation gift, the CITGO Petroleum Corporation, Medina's employer, donated $7,500. Combined, the Foundation will receive a total of $27,500 from the Medinas and CITGO.
The Medina Scholarship for Hispanics in Safety is a scholarship for bilingual safety and health graduates and undergraduates, which addresses the needs of a growing Hispanic workforce. The scholarship is for bilingual students pursuing a degree in safety, fire protection, industrial hygiene or a related field. ASSE student members can submit their applications for scholarships to the ASSE Foundation from September through December each year.
The Medina Professional Development Grant provides financial assistance to ASSE members wishing to advance their education through ASSE Certification Workshops (ASP, CSP, CHST, OHST), ASSE Professional Development Seminars or Symposia or the ASSE Professional Development Conference. This grant also includes BCSP certification fees. Each year, various awards of $650 each up to a total of $2,000 per year will be awarded. ASSE members can apply from September through December each year.
A certified safety professional (CSP) and vice president of health, safety, security, environmental protection and shared services at CITGO, Medina is a former member of the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board and has more than 29 years of safety and health experience in the petrochemical industry. He served two terms as safety representative on the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH) and also served as the ASSE vice president of professional affairs.
