ASSE Announces Kelly Bernish as 2010's Diversity in the Safety, Health and Environmental Profession Award Recipient
Des Plaines, IL (May 26, 2010) — The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) recently honored Kelly Bernish of Orlando, FL, with the Society’s Diversity in the Safety, Health and Environmental Profession award. The Diversity award, voted on by peers, is given annually to an individual for outstanding accomplishments, leadership, and service in support of diversity enhancement in the safety, health, and environmental profession and the Society.

Bernish is the Manager of Safety & Health Operations for Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts, US which includes both operations at Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California. She has nearly 25 years of experience in the occupational safety and health profession. Her previous work experience includes safety, health and environmental positions at Anheuser-Busch, SeaWorld of Florida and SeaWorld Ohio. In addition to her many noteworthy professional accomplishments, Bernish has been an active participant in ASSE at both the chapter and national Society levels. Bernish was an original member of the ASSE Diversity Committee and served on the committee from 2005-2008. She has been an active advocate for highlighting diversity in safety and helped develop a poster that historically commemorates this important element of the profession.

Bernish is also a founding member and current Chairperson for the ASSE Common Interest Group Women in Safety Engineering (WISE). She has helped oversee growth of the group, including a mentoring program for future safety leaders the quarterly newsletter, A Word to the Wise, serving as editor of the publication and a whole host of activities associated with the PDC. One of the most noteworthy projects Bernish has lent her skills to is the 100 Women in Safety Project for ASSE’s 100th anniversary in 2011. This project aims to recognize 100 women who have, or are currently, making a difference through their work and dedication to protecting people, property and the environment.

Kelly will be presented with the award during the House of Delegates meeting on Sunday, June 13 at the ASSE Professional Development Conference (PDC) in Baltimore, MD.
