California Teen Fourth Place Winner In Sixth Annual American Society of Safety Engineers International ‘Safety-On-The-Job’ Poster Contest
San Bruno, CA (March 10, 2008) — Illustrating how to be safe at work in a creative way, Martin Richard Borromeo, age 13, of San Bruno, CA recently won fourth place in the sixth annual American Society of Safety Engineers kids’ ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ poster contest in the 13-14 age category. The winning posters were selected from five age groups aged 5-14 and are featured on the North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (NAOSH) 2008 poster distributed worldwide as part of the May 4-10, 2008 NAOSH Week and May 7 Occupational Safety and Health Professional Day.

The ASSE kids’ ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ poster contest is for members’ children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as member-sponsored schools and organizations, aged 5-14 and is aimed at educating children at an early age on the importance of and how to be safe at work. Winning posters best illustrate workplace safety. In addition to winning a savings bond and being featured on the NAOSH 08 poster, the poster contest winners, runners-up and all entrants will be recognized at the NAOSH 08 national kick-off events Monday, May 5 in Washington, D.C., at the U.S. Department of Labor and in the U.S. Capitol. In addition, this year there will be a special two-hour family activity held at the National Gallery of Art, along with a behind-the-scenes tour. ASSE, U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) officials and OSHA Alliance members representing more than 134,000 businesses will participate.

Borromeo’s poster, titled ‘What are you up against? Safety Risks,’ won fourth place for best reflecting safety at work. Besides drawing, Borromeo likes art, community volunteering and sports, including basketball, baseball, track and tennis. Borromeo is involved in his community where he volunteers his time assisting younger kids after school at St. Dunstan School, helping out at the Millbrae Library, and volunteering as an assistant crew leader/counselor in training with the Salvation Army Summer Camp. He is an honor student at St. Dunstan Parish School in Millbrae, CA. ASSE Professional Member James N. Gilson, P.E. of the ASSE San Francisco Chapter sponsored Borromeo.
