The Role of Consensus Standards in Advancing Worker Safety

In a guest post to our blog, ASSE Standards Development Chair Peggy Ross discusses the role of consensus standards in advancing safety. "As OSH professionals know, compliance with regulatory requirements is often not sufficient to protect workers," Ross says. "Regulations are slow to change, often out-of-date and provide a minimum standard. Knowledge has increased and regulations lag behind current knowledge."

A significant step toward safer and healthier workplaces was taken Sept. 3 when ASSE joined more than 40 organizations from around the world in the landmark signing of the Singapore Accord, which presents a global capability framework for the occupational health and safety professional. ASSE Foundation seeks scholarship and grant applications for record distribution

The ASSE Foundation will accept scholarship and grant applications from Sept. 1 to Dec. 1 for its annual disbursement of financial awards in 2018. A record amount of $350,000 is available to occupational safety and health students and professionals, thanks to the generosity of corporate donors and the ASSE community.

The Role of Consensus Standards in Advancing Safety

Consensus standards provide invaluable guidance resources for OSH professionals to apply in their roles to protect people, property and the environment. ASSE has increased its presence in the standards-development arena to become a leader in the evolution of voluntary OSH standards. To help ASSE members get a better sense of the breadth and depth of its consensus standards, the Society is hosting Ultimate Safety Standards Palooza on Sept. 27, 2017.
