More than 300 people die each year in ladder-related incidents, and improper ladder use is consistently on OSHA’s 10 most frequently cited violations. To raise awareness among employers, employees and the public, American Ladder Institute (ALI) has declared March as National Ladder Safety Month.

External Microphones Improve Sound Measurement App Accuracy

Calibrated external microphones greatly improves the overall accuracy and precision of sound measuring iPhone and iPad apps, a NIOSH study published in The Journal of Acoustical Society found. According to the study, external microphones remove most of the variability and limitations associated with built-in smartphones.

House Democrats Introduce Bill to Strengthen Worker Health & Safety Law

Democrats on the House Education and the Workforce Committee reintroduced the Protecting America's Workers Act, legislation that would strengthen and modernize the OSH Act of 1970. The bill would also give OSHA tools to ensure that employers correct hazardous working conditions, protect whistleblowers and hold employers accountable for violations that cause death or serious injury to workers.

Noise-Related Hearing Loss: Not Just a Work Problem, CDC Finds

One in four U.S. adults who think their hearing is good in fact have hearing damage. The latest Vital Signs report, “Too Loud! For Too Long!” from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that a lot of this damage is from loud sounds encountered during everyday activities, such as using a leaf blower or going to loud concerts. These activities can damage a person’s hearing just as much as working in an extremely noisy environment.

EPA Issues Proposed TSCA Risk Evaluation Rule

EPA has proposed a rule about how the agency plans to conduct risk evaluations when determining whether a chemical substance presents an unreasonable risk of injury to health or the environment “without consideration of costs or other non-risk factors, including an unreasonable risk to a potentially exposed or susceptible subpopulation, under the conditions of use.”
