Upcoming Change to the Oil & Gas Practice Specialty

The Oil & Gas Practice Specialty and the Mining Practice Specialty will merge into the Oil, Gas, Mining, and Mineral Resources Practice Specialty with the abbreviated name being OGM Practice Specialty. This change will take effect July 1, 2017.

Fatigue Prevention Requires Robust, Vigorous Approach

Technology and night-shift work are common elements in the U.S. workplace. Both factors can create fatigue hazards on their own, and when combined, the prevalence of sleep deficiency becomes anything but deficient. A myriad of factors causes fatigue, which is why Susan Murphy, principal consultant at DEKRA Insight, says a vigorous and robust fatigue risk management system is necessary.

Time for a Change?

ASSE's Board of Directors approved two recommendations 1) Change the organization’s name to American Society of Safety Professionals. 2) Adopt a new logo. Both of these changes will now go before the House of Delegates for a vote on June 19.

ASSE statement on new Secretary of Labor

The American Society of Safety Engineers releases a statement regarding the confirmation of Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta. The statement is attributed to ASSE President Thomas Cecich, CSP, CIH, on behalf of ASSE's membership of 37,000 occupational safety and health professionals.

Popov and Rajendran named ASSE’s 2017 Outstanding Safety Educators

Georgi Popov and Sathy Rajendran, highly regarded educators within the OSH profession, have each been selected to receive ASSE's 2017 William E. Tarrants Outstanding Safety Educator Award. The two educators will be honored during ASSE’s Safety 2017 Professional Development Conference & Exposition in Denver.

April GA Update: 21% / 100 Days / 3 Months

President Trump released his “America First” budget blueprint last month, asking Congress for a 21% reduction in the Department of Labor's budget and the complete elimination of the Chemical Safety Board. ASSE supports the Chemical Safety Board and has signed onto letters in support of level-funding OSHA, NIOSH, and the CSB for FY2018.

Bethancourt named ASSE’s 2017 Safety Professional of the Year

Jeremy Bethancourt, government affairs chair of ASSE's Arizona Chapter, has been selected as ASSE's 2017 Edgar Monsanto Queeny Safety Professional of the Year. He plays a lead role in getting billboards posted throughout Arizona to bring attention to the dangers of distracted driving and the hazards of heat stress.

Arizona ASSE Chapters Government Affairs Help to Organize Distracted Driving Summit

More than four hundred concerned people from across Arizona (including some guests from Illinois and Texas) came together at the Arizona State Capitol on January 25th for the first Distracted Driving Summit. The Summit brought together victims, law enforcement, advocates, legislators and others to learn about the issue.
