Qualifications for Membership

Associate Member

For those who provide services to the OSH profession or who cooperate with OSH professionals.

Global Members

An International Member will be defined as "an applicant engaging in the broad practice of OSH and residing outside the United States."

Professional Members and Members

Must also be employed in the Safety Profession or one of its specialties, performing at least two of the following functions of the professional safety position:

  • Anticipate, identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices.

  • Develop hazard control designs, methods, procedures and programs.

  • Implement, administer and advise others on hazard controls and hazard control programs.

  • Measure, audit and evaluate the effectiveness of hazard controls and hazard control programs.

Student

Student applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Enrollment full or part-time, pursuing an undergraduate or advanced degree, in a safety-related degree program from an accredited college or university

  • Faculty Advisor verification

Qualifications for Membership

The ASSE Council on Member and Region Affairs sets the criteria for assigning membership. Classifications based on the applicant’s certification, registration, education, experience and job responsibilities, as follows:

Regular Member Requirements:
  • Current employment in OSH or one of its relevant specialties.
Professional Member Requirements:
  • 1. Shall be a certified safety professional (CSP) or certified industrial hygienist (CIH) in good standing with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals or American Board of Industrial Hygiene, respectively, or
  • 2. Shall hold an accredited certification from a body recognized by the Admissions Committee, hold a baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college or university and shall have a minimum of 5 years in the aggregate professional safety, health and environmental experience, or
  • 3. Shall be registered or licensed by a state agency as a professional engineer (P.E.), hold a baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college or university and shall have a minimum of 5 years in the aggregate professional safety, health and environmental experience, or
  • 4. Shall hold a doctorate level degree from an accredited college or university in a safety, health and environmental field recognized by the Admissions Committee and shall have a minimum of 5 years in the aggregate professional safety, health and environmental experience.
  • Thus, to obtain professional member status with ASSE, members must have one of the following certifications:
  • CSP
  • CIH

OR, one of the following certifications/licenses, along with a bachelor’s degree and 5 years of OSH experience:

  • P.E.
  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP)
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
  • Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA)
  • Chartered Member-IOSH (CMIOSH)
  • Chartered Fellow-IOSH (CFIOSH)
  • Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS)
  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist (COHN-S)
  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN)
  • Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST)
  • Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)
  • Certified Safety Health Manager (CSHM)
  • CPE (Certified Professional Ergonomist)
  • CHFP (Certified Human Factors Professional)
  • CUXP (Certified User Experience Professional)

OR must have a doctorate level degree in an SH&E field and 5 years of SH&E experience.

Emeritus (Retired) Membership

Emeritus members must:

  1. Have fully retired from gainful employment in the field of safety by reason of age or vocational change, and not currently deriving income from the practice of safety, including consulting in safety or a related field.
  2. Be sixty (60) years of age or older, unless retirement was due to health or physical disability.
  3. Have been a member of the Society for at least ten (10) years, no longer be employed in the field of safety, and shall be a member in good standing at the time of application.

Professional Emeritus members must:

  1. Have a combined total age and years of society membership equal to a total of 70.
  2. Have been a Professional Member in good standing at the time of application.

Privileges of Emeritus membership:

  • Maintain ASSE membership
  • Retain all former voting privileges
  • Receive Professional Safety Journal at the reduced rate
  • Special recognition as an Emeritus member of ASSE
To reclass as an Emeritus member of ASSE, please complete the application and submit to ASSE Headquarters.
Military Membership
ASSE is pleased to offer reduced dues to members who are:
 
  • Currently active duty military personnel in any branch of the U.S. military whose job involves OSH.
  • Current military reservists whose job involves OSH, and are on active duty (above and beyond their 2-week annual commitment).

NOTE: Proof of active service will be requested in order to receive this offer.


Military Member Benefits Include:

  • Annual dues of $15 until 1 year after separation (Chapter dues are additional)
  • Free membership in the Public Sector Practice Specialty/Military Branch
  • Unlimited access to ASSE online webinars
  • Digital copy of Professional Safety Journal (PSJ)

Personal Membership
 

Your Membership in ASSE is personal, individual and non-transferable.  Membership fees are non-refundable.

Notification of Acceptance

Please allow two weeks following receipt of complete application for notification of your election to membership.

Service begins with your election to Membership.

Membership renewal notices are mailed prior to the anniversary of your join date and cover a one year period.
