MSHA

  • President Trump nominated David Zatezalo, former CEO of Rhino Resources, to be Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health. Zatezalo has a mining engineering degree from West Virginia University and an M.B.A. from Ohio University. The Senate HELP Committee will hold his confirmation hearing on Oct. 4.
  • MSHA is also moving on several changes to workplace exams. The agency is proposing changing the recording requirements for workplace exam forms so that hazardous conditions that are "promptly corrected" no longer need to be recorded, as well as moving to allow exams to be performed either at the start of the shift or before miners enter the workplace. MSHA is hosting public hearings on the proposed changes on Oct. 24 (Washington, DC), Oct. 26 (Salt Lake City, UT), Oct. 31 (Birmingham, AL), and Nov. 2 (Pittsburgh, PA). Comments close Nov. 11, 2017.
