From Safety 2016: An Attendee's Perspective

From Guest Blogger Chet Brandon

I am excited to be given the opportunity to blog about Safety 2016 this year. I have attended many throughout the years and consistently come away appreciating the scope and energy of our profession, the fine professionals who make it up, and the future we have. I joined ASSE as a student in 1992 and am proud to now be a professional member and President-Elect of the Central Indiana Chapter. I have stayed involved through the years because it helped me, my employer organizations and the profession as a whole.

This year marks a new experience for me at the conference since I am attending as a delegate for my chapter and Region VII, an exhibitor on the exposition floor for the company I lead (ATI Worksite Solutions) and a participant in the educational sessions. I am looking forward to offering you this multifaceted view of our time together this week.

Yesterday, I attended the House of Delegates meeting and participated in the votes that made strategic decisions about the future of ASSE. What struck me most about the HOD meeting was the focused passion and enthusiasm of the participants and the leaders. Several decisions were voted on and passed with full support. Gone from the room was the inflexible ideological dissension we have grown accustomed to in the U.S. political process. It was refreshing to see a governance process functioning smoothly and efficiently that simply delivered leadership.

I am finishing this post early Monday morning before heading to the general session. Monday is the first day of the main activities of Safety 2016. I am excited to talk with my fellow OSH professionals on the expo floor and to participate with them in the educational sessions over the next 2 days. It is at this conference that I believe some of our profession’s best traits are on display: collaboration, inclusion and commitment. See you at the expo!
