The Foundation Trustees are proud to introduce the inaugural Next Generation Board, seven young professionals who will work with the Trustees to serve the mission of the Foundation. Open to members between the ages of 23 and 35, the Foundation Next Generation Board will enable young Society members to support the profession while making a strategic investment in their own careers. The ASSE Foundation will secure the perspective and energies of ASSE’s next generation of leaders, and the Next Generation Board members will enjoy unique development and advancement opportunities. The Foundation Next Generation Board will increase awareness of the Foundation’s purpose, encourage participation in the Foundation’s programs, and cultivate intergenerational connections within the Foundation community.

Lea Ann Hjetland - Chair

Donny Burke

Donny Burke has over eight years of experience in the bioengineering field, during which he has made extensive contributions to consumer products safety. He is a Senior Research Engineer and Project Manager for the biomedical engineering firm, BioEchoes, which specializes in providing customized solutions to government, corporate, and legal organizations in system safety, product design and development, injury prevention and serious mishap analysis, and ethical leadership training. Donny has been published in numerous scientific journals and conference proceedings, has delivered technical presentations around the world, and has patented devices on motor vehicle restraint design. He is currently an active member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, the Biomedical Engineering Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Automotive Engineers and is the current vice president in the Birmingham chapter of Engineers without Borders. He was the founding president of the ASSE student section at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and will soon be the section's faculty advisor. Donny holds dual B.S. degrees from UAB – Biology with honors and Biomedical Engineering. On April 1, 2013, Donny successfully defended his dissertation and will graduate with his PhD in Interdisciplinary Engineering in May.

Donny and his wife, Nikole, have two young daughters; Avery who is 5 years-old and Elle who will turn 2 in May. Family time is mostly spent on trips to the beach, visiting out-of-state family, or simply working in the garden at home.

Lea Ann Hjetland

Lea Ann Hjetland has ten years of experience as an Environmental, Health and Safety professional for industry leading organizations. Lea Ann began her career as a Safety Coordinator working for an automobile manufacturing company in Hopkinsville, KY in 2003. In 2005, she moved to Calera, AL to take a position as an Environmental, Safety and Health Supervisor position at a green sand foundry in Marion, AL.

Lea Ann’s career within Southern Company Services began in 2006 as an Environmental, Safety and Health Internal Compliance Auditor. In 2007, she was named the Safety Lead for the Plant Miller Scrubber Project and in 2008, Lea Ann accepted a Compliance Specialist, SR position with Alabama Power Company at the E.C. Gaston Steam Plant. While at E.C. Gaston, she was named a Maintenance Team Leader managing a crew of 12 Maintenance and E&I Journeymen and 1 Plant Auxiliary.

Lea Ann was named Corporate Safety and Health Coordinator for Alabama Power Company in November, 2010. In this role, she is responsible for the development and implementation of the APC Safety Plan and represents Alabama Power Company on several external committees including the Southeastern Electric Exchange, Accident Prevention Section, and National Electric Safety Code - Generation.

She received her B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health from Murray State University in Murray, KY in 2003 and is a 2012 graduate of the Alabama Power Company Leadership Development Program.

Lea Ann is active in the American Society of Safety Engineers previously serving as the Secretary and Programs Chair for the Alabama Chapter.

Lea Ann is a native of Murray, Kentucky and is married to Jason Hjetland. They have three daughters: Madyson (12), Molly (8), and Morgan (4). Her hobbies include reading, traveling, baking and watching Kentucky basketball (GO BLUE).

Jayme Kahne

Jayme Kahne graduated from Murray State University in 2010 with a Master’s of Science in Occupational Safety and Health emphasizing in Industrial Hygiene. Jayme currently works for URS Energy and Construction, located in Richland Washington. There she holds the role of project safety and health lead and industrial hygienist under the River Corridor Contract, a prime contractor to the U.S. Department of Energy. The River Corridor Contract is the $2.3 billion nuclear cleanup project, aimed at safely demolishing and remediating the Department of Defense’s Hanford Nuclear Site. In 2011 Jayme founded her company’s young professional group, Washington Closure Hanford YoPro (Young Professional) Organization and currently co-chairs the organization.

Jayme was the President of the Murray State Student Section Chapter, receiving 3 Outstanding Student Section Awards during her membership. She is presently a member of the Columbia Basin ASSE Section and member of the 2012 FSLC Planning Committee. She was recently a named one of ENR’s Top Twenty under Forty in the Northwest Region and received her Certified Safety Professional certification in late 2012.

Outside of work Jayme enjoys attempting to play golf, a glass or two of Washington’s Columbia Valley wine, traveling and yoga. Some random facts are that she has a fear of peanut butter and is the self-proclaimed “festivities engineer” at work where she often plans and coordinates after work gatherings and project milestone celebrations.

Justin M. Reese IV

Justin M. Reese IV, ARM-P is a born-and-raised University of Georgia fan who always knew he’d be a part of Bulldog Nation. He was first introduced to the safety profession through his father’s work as an officer in the US Army Chemical Corps and again as he transitioned from the military into the EHS field at the University of Georgia. As a Terry College of Business sophomore, Justin registered for an introduction to Risk Management course and through that one class, found his career path. In his final Risk Management and Insurance course at UGA, Justin met the love of his life and as risky as it was, managed to convince her to marry him.

After graduation, Justin went on to work as a Loss Control Consultant with Fireman’s Fund Insurance where he was able to work with a wide variety of clients. He founded Reese Risk Consulting in order to focus on the industries he found most intriguing. While growing his new venture, Justin obtained an MBA from Charleston Southern University. Although he enjoyed the perks of being his own boss, Justin chose to accept an offer from HITT Contracting, a national General Contractor, as Regional Safety Manager. He was able to bring numerous safety accolades to the regional offices as well as build a strong network within the EHS profession during his time with HITT. He has worked as a board member and officer of several groups including, ASSE, Associated Builders and Contractors, and the University of Georgia Alumni Association. Currently, he is the Safety Manager for Kisaq, LLC, a full-service, international General Contractor, and has spent the last 8 months working overseas in the Marshall Islands.

Justin enjoys baseball, softball, golf, boxing, hitting the gym, concerts, the occasional casino trip, and of course UGA football. His time on a desolate island atoll added scuba diving, bowling, and racquetball to his already wide variety of hobbies. He looks forward to serving and bringing his wide range of knowledge and experience to the ASSE Next Generation Board.

Ricky and his wife are anxiously awaiting the birth of their first child in early October! In his limited free time his hobbies include reading presidential biographies, competitive weightlifting, baseball, and Church duties.

Phillippe Seib

Phillippe Seib is a CHST certified corporate safety consultant employed at Vectren Corporation. Building upon his safety education from Indiana University and his involvement with the American Society of Safety Engineers as President of the IUASSE Student Section, Phillippe was hired immediately after graduating by Vectren Corporation. There, while embracing the many personal development opportunities Vectren supported, he achieved his CHST certification, among other personal accolades.

Working in a diversified environment, Phillippe is tasked with many facets of occupational health and safety at Vectren. But his most important task each day is to help others return from work to their families. Recently offered the opportunity to serve as Chair of the ASSE Foundation Next Generation Board, Phillippe looks forward to the challenges that are expected in progressing the mission of ASSE. He resides in Bloomington, Indiana with his wife Jill. There they both spend much time enjoying the beautiful weather, cooking wholesome foods, and watching both Indiana Hoosier basketball and St. Louis Cardinals baseball.

Holly Thompson

Holly Thompson, CSP, OHST is a Loss Control Consultant for The Hartford Insurance Group. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Oakland University in 2010 with a B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health. Prior to joining The Hartford, Holly was a safety engineer at Samsung in Austin, TX. Holly has been involved in ASSE for six years and is past president of Oakland University’s ASSE Student Chapter. In 2010 she received the Brad and Linda Giles scholarship through the ASSE Foundation. Holly was previously a member of the Future Safety Leaders Conference planning committee for the past 3 years. She is now part of the planning committee for the ASSE Leadership Conference that takes place every October.

Holly is originally from Rochester, Michigan but now lives in Houston, TX. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends and her new fiancé. She loves traveling and seeing new places. She also loves boating and being on the water at her families cabin in Northern Michigan. Most of her free time now consists of planning her May 2014 wedding. She is excited to be a part of the Next Generation Board and is looking forward to working with everyone on the board.
