Winners of the 10th Annual ASSE Record-Setting Kids’ Poster Contest are from AL, FL, PA, TX
DES PLAINES, IL (February 22, 2012) – The five first place winners in the American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) 10th annual ASSE kids’ ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ poster contest for those aged 5-14 are Sophia Kapp, 6, of Celebration, FL in the 5-6 age group; Tali Brobst, 8, of Trafford, PA, in the 7-8 age group; Vijeta Revankar, 10, of Seabrook, TX, in the 9-10 age group; Abigail Helser, 11, of Madison, AL, in the 11-12 age group, and Victor Fan, 13, of Orlando, FL, in the 13-14 age group. Each first place winner receives a $5,000 savings bond and is featured on the free North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH, May 6-12, 2012) Week poster distributed worldwide.
The ASSE kids’ 10th annual ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ poster contest received a record number of entries this year, more than 2500, from the U.S. and 14 other countries including Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Columbia, Egypt, Greece, Japan, Kuwait, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Sri Lanka and Venezuela. The contest aims to educate children about the importance of being safe at work and what occupational safety, health and environmental professionals do to prevent injuries and illnesses at work. The posters that best illustrate ‘safety-on-the-job’ win. The contest ended on February 14 and the entries were judged by local art teachers.
To enter, children must be sponsored by an ASSE member. There are 34,000 occupational safety, health and environmental professional members of the 100-year-old ASSE located worldwide. Many members sponsor not only their children and relatives, but local schools and their co-workers’ children. ASSE chapters often sponsor schools and local community groups. Additionally, some of the companies participating in the contest include Lamar Advertising, Disney, Clorox, URS Corp., the Architect of the U.S. Capitol, Prairie Material, Ultrasonic Power, Nucor, Afton Chemical, Genie Industries, California Safety Training Company, the Shockey Companies, Indiana University Department of Safety Sciences, CITGO, Union Gas, and Spectra Energy.
In addition to their prize and being featured on the NAOSH Week poster, the winners and the 15 runners-up will be honored at the NAOSH kick-off events in Washington, D.C., this May 6 and 7. These events will at the National Zoo, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), the U.S. Capitol and the National Gallery of Art. All poster contest winners, entrants, and their families are invited to attend the events with ASSE board officials, Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) officials, U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) officials and alliance partner supporters representing more than 50 organizations such as the Shipbuilders Group along with ASSE members from around the country. The posters will also be featured at the ASSE Professional Development Conference in Denver, CO, this June.
