Media Alert: More Than 6000 Teens & Parents to Attend March 31 Houston Career Fair Held by Federal, City and Safety Officials
Des Plaines, IL (March 27, 2007) —
WHAT: Employers from the greater Houston area along with the City of Houston, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Gulf Coast Chapter and officials from the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Wage and Hour Division and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will welcome 6,000 teenagers and their parents to the fourth annual Youth Rules! Rally, Job and Career Fair Saturday, March 31 beginning at 9 a.m. at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center.
Attendance is open to students who pre-registered for the event and is limited to the 6000 attendees who have signed up. For more information please go to http://www.youthrules.org/.
Nearly 50 Houston area employers will be there to take applications, interview job applicants and answer questions for young workers searching for a summer or post high school job. Safety and health officials will be providing key workplace safety tips, wage and hour information and updates on labor laws for young workers, employers and parents.

WHY: According to the Bureau of Labor’s Occupational Fatal Injury Report on-the-job fatalities are up for those 25 and under. About 80,000 teens suffered on-the-job injuries and illnesses in 2003 nationally. The Youth Rules! Rally will educate parents, employers and young workers about on-the-job safety practices, labor regulations and laws regarding minors. In addition, attendees will be able to interact with safety and health professionals, government agencies and organizations to provide expertise and promote positive and safe work experiences for teens.
WHO: The event is being hosted by the City of Houston, the DOL — the Wage and Hour Division and OSHA, and the ASSE Gulf Coast Chapter. Event sponsors include FabEnCo, Inc-The Safety Gate Company, CSHI, Zachry Construction, and Austin Industrial.
