Illinois Kid Winner in Fifth Annual American Society of Safety Engineers International ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ Poster Contest

Waterloo, IL (February 27, 2007) — Illustrating how to be safe at work in a creative way, Rachel Patterson, almost five, of Waterloo, IL recently won second place in the 5th Annual American Society of Safety Engineers kids ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ poster contest in the 5-6 age category. The winning posters were selected from five age groups aged 5-14 and will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (NAOSH) 2007 as part of the May 6 –12, 2007 NAOSH Week and May 9 Occupational Safety and Health Professional Day.

The ASSE kids’ ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ poster contest is for members’ children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews aged 5-14 and is aimed at educating children at an early age on the importance of and how to be safe at work. Winning posters best illustrate workplace safety. In addition to winning a savings bond and being featured on the NAOSH 07 poster, the poster contest winners, runners-up and all entrants will be recognized at the NAOSH 07 national kick-off events Monday, May 7 in Washington, D.C., at the U.S. Department of Labor and in the U.S. Capitol. ASSE, U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) officials and OSHA Alliance members representing more than 134,000 businesses will participate.

Patterson’s poster, titled ‘Dig Safety Call First,’ received second place for creatively showing safety at work. The second place winners all receive savings bonds. Besides drawing, Patterson likes playing with her friends, fishing and boating. She attends Kid’s Academy in Waterloo. ASSE Professional Member John Patterson of Waterloo, IL, her father, sponsored Patterson.
