The event sponsored by the Gulf Coast Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division and its Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the City of Houston is aimed at promoting workplace safety and providing summer and full-time employment opportunities to young workers. The fair aims to bring teens, parents, educators, employers, government, unions and advocacy groups together to answer questions on workplace safety, labor laws, regulations and job opportunities.
According to the Bureau of Labor’s Occupational Fatal Injury Report on-the-job fatalities are up for those 25 and under. About 80,000 teens suffered on-the-job injuries and illnesses in 2003 nationally. The Youth Rules! Rally will educate parents, employers and young workers about safety practices, labor regulations and laws regarding minors. In addition, attendees will be able to interact with safety and health professionals, government agencies and organizations to provide expertise and promote positive and safe work practices for young workers.
Youth Rules! is a national initiative launched by the DOL in May 2002 to increase public awareness of federal and state rules concerning young workers. Through the Youth Rules! initiative the DOL and its partners, including ASSE, seek to promote positive and safe work experiences that help prepare young workers to enter the 21st century workforce. At the event, ASSE members, DOL and City officials will be available to answer questions about job safety and work rules as well as teen job opportunities.
There is no cost to attend this event, but it is limited to 6000 attendees.
