Gaithersburg Safety Professional Honored For His Ongoing Commitment to Enhancing Safety

Gaithersburg, MD (October 14, 2008) — The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) recently announced that Bruce A. Donato, CSP, CECD, president of the ASSE National Capital Chapter and deputy regional vice president of ASSE’s Region VI, was honored with the Friend of the Academy Award for his contributions to the Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (CHMM) credential and the Academy of CHMM (ACHMM) by ACHMM.

Donato is currently the principal of K & A First Aid, LLC, providers of compliance programs and training, in Gaithersburg, MD. Previously, Donato served as the Frederick site facilities and security manager for Life Technologies, Inc. He has also held safety, engineering and management positions with Hoechst Celanese Corporation, CPS Chemical Company, and E.I. DuPont de Nemours Inc. Donato has a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He is also an instructor trainer for the American Red Cross (ARC), American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) and the American Heart Association (AHA). Last year he received the ARC Arlington Chapter Health and Safety Volunteer of the Year award. An active member of ASSE, Donato has won the ASSE National Capital Chapter Safety Professional of the Year award and is also a member of the ASSE Consultants Practice Specialty. Donato also volunteers his time with both the Boy and Girl Scouts of America and as an adult leader trainer.

The Friend of the Academy Award is given to an individual who does not hold the CHMM designation but has made significant contributions to the CHMM credential and to the overall goal of ACHMM at the national level. The ACHMM president or board of directors selects the recipient and looks for individuals who have made major contributions to the goals and purposes of the ACHMM in one year, or has made a long-term sustained contribution over several years that made a long-lasting and positive impact on the programs of ACHMM. Only one person is given this honor each year.
