FL Children Take Top Spots in 10th Annual ASSE International Poster Contest
DES PLAINES, IL (February 29, 2012) – Not only did two Florida children win two of the top five awards in the 10th annual international American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) kids’ ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ poster contest, but also took the second and third place slots in the 5-6 age group. The contest for children aged 5-14, which aims to teach children about being safe at work and the occupational safety, health and environmental profession, set a record drawing more than 2500 posters from the U.S. and 14 other countries.
Sophia Kapp, 6, of Celebration, FL, won first place in the 5-6 age group for her poster titled ‘Man is using a stop sign and crossing lines for son’s safety’ and Victor Fan, 13, of Orlando, FL, won first place in the 13-14 age group for his poster titled ‘Beware of unsafe conditions’. Both Sophia and Victor will receive a $5,000 savings bond prize and their posters will be featured on the ASSE 2012 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH, May 6-12, www.asse.org/naosh) Week poster distributed worldwide. They will also be honored in Washington, D.C., this May 6 and 7, at the ASSE NAOSH kick-off events at the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Capitol, the National Gallery of Art and at a special brunch at the U.S. National Zoo.
ASSE member Heather Earl, CSP, manager of Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts Safety Services – Magic Kingdom® Park, sponsored the Florida winners and close to 300 other entries. The Florida winners also include Talia Maloff, 6, of Celebration, FL, who placed 2nd and Takoda Paschel, 5, Celebration, FL, who placed 3rd in the 5-6 age group. Talia wins a $500 savings bond and Takoda wins a $200 savings bond. Sophia, Talia and Takoda are from the same school in Celebration, the Foreign Language Immersion Early Childhood Center and Preparatory Academy.
Other first place winners in the ASSE contest include Tali Brobst, 8, of Trafford, PA, in the 7-8 age group; Vijeta Revankar, 10, of Seabrook, TX, in the 9-10 age group; and, Abigail Helser, 11, of Madison, AL, in the 11-12 age group.
In addition to the Florida children, the other contest winners include: 5-6 age group –4th place Megan Yin, 5, Chatham, Ontario, Canada; 7-8 age group – 2nd place Lily Sugra, 8, Millersville, PA; 3rd place Melina Merritt, 7, Humble, TX; 4th place George Kronis, 8, Charlton, MA; 9-10 age group — 2nd place Brynne Coulam, 10, Boise, ID; 3rd place Carli Hamilton, 9, Bunker Hill, W.VA; 4th place Karah Leggett, 10, Louisville, KY; 11-12 age group – 2nd place Tiffany Heishman, 11, Strasburg, VA; 3rd place Gracie Galiffo, 12, Salem, OH; 4th place Anjela Sevilla, 12, Saudi Arabia; and the 13-14 age group – 2nd place Andy Yu, 13, Kapoki, Hawaii; 3rd place – Nixy Varghese, 13, Kuwait; and, 4th place – Elizabeth Tony, 13, Kuwait.
