ASSE’s Southwest Chapter to Mark Major Milestone

WHAT: Top Dallas area occupational safety, health and environmental professionals will join with American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) Senior Vice President Patricia M. Ennis, CSP, ARM, to discuss workplace safety then and now at the ASSE Southwest Chapter’s 75th Anniversary celebration November 12 in Dallas. The Southwest Chapter was founded in 1937.

The afternoon event will also feature a historical walk through local occupational safety, health and environmental milestones and professional achievements that have contributed to a safer community. The event will honor ASSE past presidents (a list of past presidents are at who have volunteered their time to help make their community safer and to provide ongoing networking and education for the thousands of occupational safety, health and environmental professionals who live and work in the greater Dallas-Ft. Worth metro area.

The Southwest Chapter is one of the oldest ASSE chapters in the world; its charter was issued on November 23, 1937. Months after the horrific Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire that took the lives of 146 workers on March 25, 1911, the 101-year-old American Society of Safety Engineers was founded in October of 1911.

At the 75th Anniversary event, Southwest Chapter past presidents who served in 1955, 1979, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2010 and 2008-10, will be honored for their significant contributions towards sustaining the chapter and the work of its local members. Southwest Chapter President Jim Johnstone and attendees will recognize the three longest serving members of the Southwest Chapter, one who joined on February 1, 1960, and two who joined November 1, 1962. Southwest Chapter Past President Karl Osborn will provide an historical overview of the chapter. Other current chapter officers include First Vice President Shannon Mitchum, Treasurer Mark Cline and Secretary Stephanie Johnson.
