ASSE’s Philadelphia Chapter Celebrates 75 Years
Des Plaines, IL (August 5, 2010) — The American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) Philadelphia Chapter is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Chartered on July 1, 1935, the Philadelphia Chapter is one of the almost 100 year old Society’s oldest chapters. ASSE, founded in NY City in 1911, is now based in Des Plaines, IL, and has more than 32,000 occupational safety, health and environmental professional members located worldwide. Today, the Philadelphia chapter has over 550 members and actively works to promote being safe at work and the safety, health and environmental profession while in the greater Philadelphia area.
The Philadelphia Chapter has hosted professional development seminars and has had numerous members participate in national presentations and conferences. In 2007, the chapter was host to an emergency management conference in conjunction with the Penn-Jersey Chapter to explore lessons in emergency response learned from the 9/11 tragedy. The chapter was also very involved with ASSE relief efforts during Hurricane Katrina and made donations to the Red Cross Disaster Fund, while promoting the cause and encouraging its members to do the same. Members have presented at the annual ASSE Professional Development Conference (PDC) and have contributed to various standards projects at the national level. In addition, many of the Philadelphia Chapter’s members have been recognized for their service and involvement with ASSE. This year, Philadelphia Chapter member J. Nigel Ellis received the Fellow Award, which is ASSE’s highest honor.
As the Philadelphia Chapter celebrates this milestone anniversary year, reinforcing the importance of workplace safety and the occupational safety and health profession are top priorities. The amount of effort required to raise awareness for safety-on-the-job is no small task and the active participation and support by all members is much needed. Participation in chapter meetings, events and educational programs is key for success as the chapter continues to work toward its goals of supporting the practice of safety and health, assisting environmental safety and health professionals in the Philadelphia area and ensuring safety and healthier workplaces for all. The Philadelphia Chapter thanks its members for their hard work and dedication to supporting its endeavors.
