The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) is proud to announce that the Greater Chicago Chapter has been awarded the Medium Chapter of the Year Award.  The Greater Chicago Chapter is a chapter of the year award winner for the third year in a row and was named the small chapter of the year in 2007 and medium chapter of the year in 2009.  The Greater Chicago Chapter will be honored with the award at the annual ASSE Professional Development Conference (PDC) in Chicago, IL, June 12 – June 15, 2011.

Since its inception in 1950, the Greater Chicago Chapter has significantly contributed to the mission of ASSE and has grown its membership during the last 61 years.  With over 300 members and a commitment to protecting people, property and the environment, the Greater Chicago Chapter is continuously contributing to the field.  The chapter is working locally to develop greening industry safety standards, a “Breakfast with OSHA” series geared toward small businesses in struggling neighborhoods and a graduate student mentoring program with the chapter’s University of Illinois at Chicago student section.  The chapter also organizes community events such as food drives and continues to be an active force in the Northern Illinois area.  At ‘Safety 2010,’ in Baltimore, MD, the chapter manned ASSE’s 100th Anniversary booth at its record-breaking exposition, working tirelessly to help spread the message about the milestone year for the Society and encourage participation from conference attendees.  For more information about the Greater Chicago Chapter, current events and upcoming meetings, please visit

Al Borzych, Greater Chicago Chapter President 2009-2010, stated, “The Greater Chicago Chapter takes pride in our actions, achievements and our results. We have a passion for the safety profession and what we do, whether at home, on the job, or as volunteers. Not that long ago, we were falling apart at the seams, but we persevered, grew our membership and through hard work and dedication we arrived at the point we are today.  Thank you for this great honor.”

All chapters who wish to be considered for the chapter of the year awards must be nominated by their ASSE Regional Vice President and are chosen based on their activities, application and information provided to the judging committee.  To be nominated, all chapters must first earn a Chapter Star.  The Chapter Stars Recognition Program is intended to recognize Chapters that give their members superior service by providing quality programs designed to advance the professional growth of their members, support the mission and vision of ASSE and make a positive impact on the people, property and environment in their community.

Founded in 1911 and celebrating its centennial, the Des Plaines, IL-based ASSE is the oldest professional safety society and is committed to protecting people, property and the environment.  Its more than 33,000 occupational safety, health and environmental professional members lead, manage, supervise, research and consult on safety, health, transportation and environmental issues in all industries, government, labor, healthcare and education.  For more information, please go to and to view the new ASSE – A Century of Safety film go to .  For more information about ASSE’s Greater Chicago Chapter, please visit
