ASSE Releases Second Edition of its Popular Publication “The Safety Professional’s Handbook”

DES PLAINES, IL (March 30, 2012) – The
recent release of the second edition of one of the American Society of Safety
Engineers’ (ASSE) most popular technical publications, “The Safety
Professional’s Handbook” is expected to bring safety, health and environmental
(SH&E) professionals an updated and expanded body of knowledge, intended to
be a vast source of information for all segments of the diverse safety
The 81 chapter publication includes significant
revisions to almost all of the 79 chapters from the first edition, and also
includes two new chapters: Sustainability and the SH&E Professional, and Best
Practices in Industrial Hygiene. The New Edition, which consists of
contributions from over 100 experienced SH&E professionals, is a resource
for SH&E managers launching new programs or who want to benchmark and
improve existing programs.
“The Safety Professionals Handbook,” a Second Edition
also includes new information and updates on:
  • Environmental and Engineering Management Systems
  • Information Management Systems
  • Substance abuse prevention and workers compensation
  • The aging workforce
  • OSHA Training Requirements
  • OSHA Outreach Training Program
  • New approaches and updated regulatory requirements

“It’s written by experienced professionals for
professionals in the safety field,” explained ASSE Member Joel Haight, PhD.,
P.E., the publication’s editor. “It is truly a summary of what is out there.”

Dr. Haight, who also served as the editor of the book’s
first edition in 2008, is the Branch Chief of the Human Factors Branch at the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at their Pittsburgh Office of Mine
Safety and Health Research, where he manages the NIOSH branch that does human
factors, ergonomics, behavioral and training research for the mining industry.

“The Safety Professional’s Handbook” was also peer
reviewed by hundreds of experienced technical reviewers to provide its readers
the greatest technical accuracy and depth of coverage. “The peer review process
makes sure that all of the information is vetted before it is published for use,”
Dr. Haight explained.

In addition, an updated and revised Instructors Guide
for ‘The Safety Professional’s Handbook’
which will include questions and answers for each of  its chapters will be available to instructors
who have adopted the book for a course, at no charge.
