Are You Prepared? American Society of Safety Engineers to Hold Crisis Management Symposium, Discuss Texas City Explosion & More

WHAT: Is your organization prepared to handle a crisis? Any crisis? Do you have a plan in place now and have you communicated that with your fellow employees and community leaders? The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) two-day Crisis Management Symposium in Houston in November will address these questions and more. The symposium aims to help attendees identify their organization’s risk for a catastrophic event and focuses on the safety leadership role in times of crisis. How to build a crisis management plan, develop the safety professional’s role and responsibility to manage a crisis, and how to recover from a crisis are some of the symposium’s key topics. ASSE President Michael W. Thompson, CSP, of Houston, Texas will open the symposium.

WHO: Keynote speakers include Dr. Ian Mitroff, president of Comprehensive Crisis Management, Inc., Oakland CA, who is also a professor at Alliant International University in San Francisco, a professor emeritus from USC, a visiting professor at UC Berkeley and an adjunct professor in the school of public health at St. Louis University. Dr. Mitroff and his company have consulted the nation’s leading companies on crisis management and will discuss a new proactive approach that focuses on preventing a crisis. Also, Dr. Myles Druckman, VP of Medical Services of International SOS and a leading authority on pandemic management will discuss corporate pandemic planning. Dr. Michael Broadribb, director of process safety at BP International, Ltd., Middlesex, England, will discuss the lessons learned from BP Texas City; and Dr. Robert Emery, DrPH, CSP, CIH, CHP, CHMM, CPP, ARM, of the University of Texas Health Science Center will discuss media communications.
Many other speakers with experience in preventing, managing, leadership and planning for all types of contingency situations will be featured during the symposium. Other sessions and hands-on exercises will be on planning; using the NFPA 1600 to build a crisis management plan; establishing an optimal organized structure for crisis management; managing a workplace violence crisis; procedures for managing the incident investigation process in a crisis; and much more.
