ANNUAL CHICAGOLAND SAFETY & HEALTH CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES NEW KEYNOTE SPEAKER FROM CHEMICAL SAFETY BOARD

DES PLAINES, IL (August 29, 2006) – The 18 th annual Chicagoland Safety and Health Conference officials announced today that Gary L. Visscher of the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) will be the new keynote speaker for day two of the Sept. 18-22, 2006, conference. Cindy Coe Laseter, regional administrator for Region IV of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), is the opening day keynote speaker for the conference, which will include workplace safety topics on bio-terrorism, ergonomics, environmental safety and much more.

The conference focuses on issues aimed at increasing workplace safety and health throughout the Midwest and is co-sponsored by the American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) ASSE Northeastern Illinois Chapter, the ASSE Greater Chicago Chapter, and the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), in association with OSHA, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Northern Illinois University and OSHA’s National Safety Education Center.

Visscher was appointed to the CSB in 2004, by President Bush. Previously, he served as deputy assistant secretary of OSHA from November 2001 until August 2004 and as vice president, employee relations, for the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington, D.C. Visscher also served as a presidential appointee to the OSHA Review Commission, and prior to that, served for 14 years as a legislative staff person in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School and Calvin College.

The conference, to be held at Northern Illinois University in Naperville, IL, is for employers, employees and all parties interested in safety and health. Conference sessions will cover topics such as construction safety, ergonomics, environmental safety, machine guarding, recordkeeping, bio-terrorism, effective safety management and training techniques. Proceeds from the conference provide scholarships for students pursuing a career in occupational safety or a related field, as well as providing support to local safety and health organizations. In addition to training sessions, there is an exhibit area that includes government agencies and non-profit organizations, as well as private companies.
