AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS HONOR UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA-DULUTH WITH ANNUAL NATIONAL AWARD
DES PLAINES, IL (June 27, 2006) – The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) presented the Outstanding Student Section of the Year award, co-sponsored by the Mine Safety Appliances Company, to The University of Minnesota-Duluth (UNM-Duluth) at ASSE’s annual Professional Development Conference held in Seattle, WA, this month for making the most significant contributions to safety education and research this year. This is the first year that UNM-Duluth has received the award.
Aubrey Gold, president of the student chapter, accepted a plaque and $6,000 honorarium on behalf of UNM-Duluth. The award designates $4,000 of the honorarium toward scholarships for at least two deserving members of the section, as selected by the school.
There were 11 other student chapters who met the initial eligibility qualifications for the award including Central Maine Community College, Central Missouri State University, Illinois State University, Iowa State University, Millersville University, Murray State University, Northeastern State University, Oakland University, Penn State University, Southeastern Oklahoma State University and West Virginia University. These chapters also received $500 stipends and plaques for contributions to safety education.
The purpose of the Outstanding Student Section of the Year award is to recognize and encourage the activities of established ASSE student sections and to honor the section making the most significant contributions toward the advancement of excellence in safety education and research. Currently there are approximately 905 ASSE student members and 62 student chapters.
