NIOSH Blogs Michigan Research on Amputations
NIOSH’s Science Blog (http://blogs.cdc.gov/niosh-science-blog/2013/03/amputations/) has reported on research from Michigan State
University and the Michigan Department of Community Health on work-related
amputations. Published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the research found 616 work-related amputations in Michigan, which was two and a half times more amputations than identified by BLS data collection methods. Under Assistant Secretary Michaels’ leadership, the issue of underreporting has received heightened focus at OSHA, and OSHA in 2011 proposed changing reporting requirements for amputations, which ASSE addressed in a comment (http://www.asse.org/en/index.php/govt_affairs/asse-comments-on-oshas-proposed-reporting-requirement-changes/) to OSHA.
