DOT Proposes National Tunnel Inspection Standards

Posted in on Thu, Sep 2, 2010

The Department of Transportation has announced its proposal for national tunnel safety inspection standards. As the DoT says, “Currently, FHWA can and does provide tunnel inspection guidance, but existing regulations do not require tunnel owners, such as state departments of transportation or local authorities, to inspect tunnels. In addition, inspection methods vary significantly among the roughly estimated 350 highway tunnels in the country.” A press release on the proposal can be found at http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/pressroom/fhwa1028.htm
