Dawn of New Leadership in Safety Research at NIOSH

Posted in on Mon, Jun 27, 2011

The following is a June 27 email from NIOSH Director John Howard –

It is my pleasure to announce that Ms. Dawn Castillo has accepted the position of the Director of the NIOSH Division of Safety Research (DSR), effective July 3, 2011.

Dawn began her career at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in 1991 from the University of California at Irvine.  Her first assignment at NIOSH was that of Research Epidemiologist from 1991 through 1997.  She became Acting Chief of the Injury Surveillance Section in 1997 and then Chief of the Surveillance and Field Investigations Branch in 1998.

During her career at NIOSH, Dawn has authored numerous publications in the field of traumatic occupational injury surveillance, vehicular safety, agricultural injury and injuries to younger workers.  She has been the principal author or contributed on every set of recommendations NIOSH has made to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) since 1994 about protections for younger workers as well as other regulatory actions undertaken by DOL.  Dawn has represented the Institute with distinction during every print and electronic news interview she has done. She has fostered many partnerships with many public agencies and many private sector organizations and individuals—for the betterment of safety research and to the benefit of workers.  In 2004, Dawn received the James P. Keogh Award for Outstanding Service in Occupational Safety and Health.

Dawn also serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine in the West Virginia University School of Medicine.  Dawn has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of California at Irvine and a Masters of Public Health degree from the School of Public Health at the University of California at Los Angeles.

I am confident Dawn will lead the Division of Safety Research to even greater levels of engagement with safety and engineering partners, supporting the NIOSH Prevention-through-Design Initiative, promoting high quality research in the field of traumatic injury, and developing new areas of safety research for the 21st century.

Please join me in wishing Dawn every success with her new assignment as DSR Director.
