Region IV, North Florida/Georgia Area - Area Director

Paul M. Thomas

Paul M. Thomas is a Safety Coordinator for JEA, the 8th largest municipality in the country in Jacksonville, Florida.  In his current position at JEA he is responsible for supporting and leading several safety functions for the 2400 employee electric, water and sewer utility.  Prior to joining JEA in 2003, he was the Area Support Manager for Zachry Construction, a San Antonio based company.  Mr. Thomas primarily served projects in the southeast.  Prior to that, he was in safety and industrial hygiene consulting for 10 years.  Mr. Thomas has 27 years of experience in both private and public sectors and has perspective as an owner and consultant. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business from Florida State University.

An ASSE member since 2000, Mr. Thomas currently serves as the Area Director for north Florida and south Georgia.  He has previously served the North Florida chapter as Membership Chair, Vice-President, President (2003-2005), Treasurer for 7 years and currently serves as the Delegate.  He was part of the organizing team for the Regional PDC in Jacksonville several years ago and spearheaded donations to the local fire department for their Bicycle Emergency Response Team (BERT).  He was the North Florida Chapter’s Safety Professional of the year for 2011-2012.  He has also attended ASSE’s leadership conference twice.  He currently serves as a board member for the Northeast Florida Safety Council that provides safety training to the greater Jacksonville area.

Platform Statement

I am sold, sold on the value of being an ASSE member and active in the Society.  Engaged members are the key to ASSE’s success, in whatever form it takes for the member.  Whether it is a local chapter meeting, a PDC, or the use of Society’s ever expanding resources, it makes our profession and Chapters stronger.

As a member of ASSE and the North Florida Chapter since 2000 I have seen the value of membership over the past 17+ years.  I have experienced and witnessed members being resources to others for workplace issues, the Chapter being a conduit for employers recruiting, employees searching for jobs and the Society lending its support for legislative issues at the state level.  I have made friendships, personal and professional, within my Chapter and beyond through my participation in ASSE within Region IV.  This network forged between members is one of the greatest benefits I hear members talk about year in and year out at the Chapter level.

The Area Director serves as an important link between Chapters and the Region.  I will work to keep Chapters informed about Society business and keep the Region current on Chapter accomplishments and needs.  As your Area Director for North Florida/South Georgia I will assist local chapters with their mission by providing support, communication and information that fosters an engaged membership and Chapter.  My first term has been an active one.  I have held three Area Operating Committee meetings in my first year, attended the PDC in Baton Rouge, participated in Regional Operating Committee meetings, visited chapters in Pensacola, Jacksonville and Savannah and have a visit to the Space Coast Chapter scheduled.  I am hopeful that I will be able to serve another term and support our area’s great chapters.
