Platform Statement

1. National Healthcare Safety forum. The HCPS can be a national gathering place at our annual PDC’s and a strong voice for healthcare workers and employers. Because of the healthcare industry’s employee injury statistics are in a long running record of having some of the highest incident rates (Bureau of Labor Statistics-BLS) there is need for a national healthcare safety forum to connect thought leaders and create change.

2. Build the body of knowledge BOK of healthcare safety. The Healthcare industry is currently a focus for Federal OSHA due to the injury rates. OSHA’s National Emphasis Program (NEP) is focused on such things as MSD injuries, Workplace Violence, Infectious Disease Exposures, sharps injury prevention, and slips and fall prevention. The ASSE has a Body of Knowledge where we in the HCPS need to be called to contribute and continue to develop the BOK healthcare safety library.  Our advisory group and circle of influence together can help build the BOK library.

3. Healthcare Safety Professional Development. The HCPS offers one of the only specialty groups in the country to offer healthcare safety professional communication, development / training events. Whether by webinar, written resources, professional development conferences, round tables or working meetings and networking I want to help our team to continue offering quality professional development offerings for healthcare safety professionals.

4.Business case for healthcare safety.  The healthcare industry staffing ratios for safety professionals are some of the most extreme of any industry. Healthcare safety staffs often have other responsibilities beyond occupational safety. This multi-focused work is a contributing factor to the lack of improvement in injury rates within healthcare. The HCPS can help communicate the business case for staffing for qualified safety staff in healthcare.
