Ken Wengert, CSP, ARM



Ken Wengert, CSP, ARM has over 30 years of safety, environmental and risk management experience in manufacturing and insurance industries. For the past 22 years, Ken has worked for Kraft Foods in roles of Division Safety Manager, Area Director, Program Director and his current role of Director of Safety, Environmental and Sustainability. Based outside of Chicago, he is responsible for the development of the safety, environmental and sustainability strategies and processes that cover approximately 22,000 employees in over 45 locations. Prior to Kraft, Ken worked for the Hershey Chocolate Division of Hershey Foods as Plant and Division Safety Manager in Hershey, PA. He started his career as a Loss Control Specialist with Sentry Insurance.

Ken started his service to ASSE with the Central PA Chapter serving in various Chapter positions including two terms as Chapter President. He has served as a Member of both the Council for Professional Development and Council on Professional Affairs. While a member of the Professional Development Council, Ken served on the Strategic Planning Committee. He chaired the Safety Management Symposium and served on the Leadership Initiative Task Force. Currently he is a member of the Business of Safety Committee and Framing the Safety Profession Task Force. Ken is a two time recipient of the Culbertson Award for significant service to ASSE.

Ken also currently serves on OSHA’s Whistle Blowers Protection Committee and NIOSH’s NORA Manufacturing Council.

Ken received a Bachelor of Science in Safety Science from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Platform Statement


I believe in the Vision of ASSE which is to be a global advocate and premier leader for the SH&E profession and professional. In order to reach this vision, the Society will need to have a robust strategic plan, annual action plans against aligned goals and executional excellence. I believe there is a huge opportunity to better align the Councils, Committees, Task Forces and members as a whole to drive the organization forward. ASSE does not take full advantage of the over 36,000 members of the Society. In order to best accomplish this the individuals that serve in the newly created Director at Large positions must be experienced safety professionals, have a passion for the profession, and experience within ASSE.

With over 30 years of experience in the safety profession I believe I have demonstrated passion for the profession. Having led the EHS organization for Kraft Foods for the past 8 years, I have direct experience with strategic planning for the EHS function, as well as, for the overall Kraft business. I think these skills can be directly applied to ASSE. I have served two terms on each the Council for Professional Development Council and the Council on Professional Affairs, seven years as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee, served on the Leadership and Framing the Profession Task Forces, and served as membership chair for the Manufacturing Branch. These opportunities have provided a broad range of experiences with the Society and provided first-hand knowledge of opportunities to improve ASSE. While a member of the Council on Professional Affairs, I contributed to the launch of the Risk Assessment Institute and Center for Safety and Health Sustainability. It is initiatives like these that will help ASSE achieve its Vision.

I look forward to the opportunity of serving the membership of ASSE.
