Safety Professionals and the Latino Workforce (SPALW) Administrator Candidate

Carolina Modesto, CHST, STS

Biography

Carolina Modesto, CHST, STS is a long time, active professional member of ASSE with over ten years of experience in the safety and health industry.  She currently has the opportunity, to consult and manage proactive safety programs overseas with focus on improving workplace processes to effectively control occupational risks.  She conducts safety training geared towards promoting the overall safety culture and develops safety initiatives to enhance workplace safety and sustainability.

The greatest achievement during her previous position was significantly improving the safety culture of local management and front line employees.  It is very rewarding to see employees taking positive behavioral safety actions when no one is looking. Customers would come up surprised at the employees’ demonstrated commitment to safety. Ms. Modesto also implemented proactive safety measures at all the locations she managed for a major company, which naturally led to the sustained reduction of serious incidents.

Carolina has regularly volunteered for different organizations in the community.

She participated as a Spanish speaker for the OSHA’s DOL Worker Fair in Houston, TX training a great number of Hispanic workers.  On a similar note, she was also an active member of the Austin AGC Safety Committee and chaired two of its sub-‐ committees.

Carolina is a BCSP certified Construction Health & Safety Technician and holds a degree in Psychology. She has served as Chapter Secretary and Newsletter Chair of the Central Texas Chapter.

Platform Statement

As soon as I became a professional member of ASSE, I immediately chose SPALW as my practice specialty. Shortly thereafter I helped translate safety-‐training material into Spanish for the group. Welcoming each new member and continuing to spread enthusiasm for what we do, makes all our goals that much easier to achieve.

SPALW, as an ASSE Common Interest Group, shall continue to encourage members to play an active role and participate in the events and projects we put together. We shall persist in reaching out to all EHS professionals worldwide, who determinedly protect the safety and health of the Hispanic workforce.

Many talented and devoted members from diverse backgrounds comprise the SPALW membership. It is from within these members’ experiences that we can discuss, research, and develop techniques to better reach the Spanish-‐speaking workforce in order to mitigate and control the risks that they face on a daily basis.

SPALW is currently working on a variety of essential projects. As Assistant Administrator it is my goal to continue to support these initiatives in order to progress and provide HSE professionals with exceptional resources to reach out and effectively communicate with the Hispanic workforce. With this in mind, it is of utmost importance for our group to serve as an efficient liaison between EHS professionals and the Hispanic community. Our group will be considered an exceptional network of experts who selflessly share best practices, materials and ideas for the benefit of the communities we serve.

SPALW currently has many brilliant and dedicated members and I would feel honored with your vote to assist in leading this extraordinary ASSE Common Interest Group and take it to the next level.
