Michael F. Lorenzo, MS, CSP
Construction Safety Consultant
Michael Lorenzo has over 20 years of experience in the health and safety field, beginning in 1983 as a U.S. Army medic. He went on to build his health and safety knowledge working for the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and IBM. For six years, Lorenzo worked for the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) as a federal safety and health compliance officer, focusing on construction and industrial workplace safety. In 2000, he began working at Pinnacol Assurance as a construction specialist. Lorenzo’s extensive knowledge of safety and loss prevention industry standards and changes allow him to accurately evaluate his customers’ risks and provide them with the best assistance in developing safety programs that will reduce injuries and save money. An accomplished public speaker, he has varied professional knowledge and skills in program development and implementation, loss analysis, and training development.
Lorenzo has a master’s degree in environmental health and safety management from the University of Denver, as well as two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Colorado in Boulder, one in kinesiology and the other in biology. He is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) with a Construction Specialty designation. He is also a member of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH); the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) and Rocky Mountain Section (AIHA-RMS); the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE); the Human Factors and Ergonomic Society (HFES); and the National Association of Environmental Managers (NAEM).

The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) as an organization is one of the oldest and strongest professional organizations known worldwide. The challenges that face our society in the 21st century are not unlike that of any other global organization, maintenance of its member’s diversification, innovation, and communication/involvement. As safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) professionals our SHE imprint is more important than ever.
Member diversification means to maintain the global approach by the society. Promoting the SH&E professional and the profession will continue the global dialogue. The society must be a resource for continued education and training. This continued influence would develop new leadership and involvement within the profession. This leadership will translate into continued and effective risk management by the SH& E professional which ultimately helps organizations meet their business goals of profitability through sound risk management.
Innovation is what keeps a professional society expanding its body of knowledge and it is the ingenuity of its members that grows our success into the future. Continuing to partner with stakeholders and continued development of new ideas with involving young people maintain our competitive edge as an organization.
As safety, health, and environmental professionals we can and do make a difference within global business operations and our SHE imprint is more important than ever. We will rise to the challenge as we approach our 100-year anniversary and beyond as a global leader in safety, health and the environment.
