The challenges facing health and safety professionals continue to grow. How can today’s safety professional keep up and continue to demonstrate value? I can’t think of a better way than by being an active member of your local ASSE Chapter!

An effective local Chapter can offer safety professionals access to people and resources unparalleled anywhere else, serving as an unofficial extension of your safety staff. However, to remain effective each chapter must grow through the addition and involvement of new members and developing relevant professional offerings.

As Area Director of the Metropolitan Area, I will continue to bring the experience and success achieved by the NJ Chapter to the entire region. As President, I filled 5 Chair positions, including a new Community Outreach Chair. These new members are critical to the continuing growth of our chapter by introducing new energies and new ideas to an already outstanding group of people. We held 3 successful PDCs on current topics of interest including Pandemic Planning and Career Development which included advice from Human Resource professionals on resume development.

I am especially proud to have started as Community Outreach Chair and increased our involvement with schools in the area. Our classroom sessions with children in grades 1 – 5 via the Safety Poster contest have been a huge hit, but we need to do much more in this area. After all, these are the future members of our Society and it’s never too early to increase health and safety awareness and involvement!
