Kayaking the Endangered Indian River Lagoon

View endangered Indian River Lagoon by kayak. The certified guides narrate the significance of this endangered backwater estuary, a wilderness waterway used by the indigenous Timucuan Indians during their winter hunting as they lead you up the Indian River’s endangered estuary to its sheltered backwater lagoon islands where you will have the opportunity to see a sanctuary for the endangered West Indian Manatees, Bottled-Nose Dolphins, Florida Alligators, American Bald Eagles, Ro seate Spoonbills, & Wood Storks as well as an extensive list of birds and wildlife. Participants will take an easy paddle along the shore line of this protected, calm, inland water way from Manatee Cove to the estuary’s wild, uninhabited barrier island, stop for an easy-guided nature walk, paddling rest, a nd stretch before heading back.

The tour involves walking in some locations. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen and dress for the weather. ASSE cannot guarantee the observation of wildlife as this tour takes place in nature.

Downtown Winter Park’s charm is magnified in its details: hidden gardens and side streets that are home to one-of-a-kind boutiques and well-known shops, sidewalk cafés, as well as world-renowned art collections in the area’s museums. Take the Scenic Boat Tour that cruises canals between the city’s lakes that border the area’s most prestigious homes and magnificent mansions, Rollins College, Kraft Azalea Gardens, Isle of Sicily, tropical birds, plants and flowers. Following the boat tour, enjoy a leisurely stroll down Park Avenue to the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art which houses the most comprehensive collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s works found anywhere, major holdings of American art pottery and representative collections of late-19 th and early-20 th century American paintings, graphics and decorative arts. Spend the remainder of your day shopping on Park Avenue.

Kennedy Space Center is NASA’s launch headquarters. Your exploration of Kennedy Space Center starts with one of their world-renowned tours, where you see many NASA landmarks, including the massive launch pads, the gigantic Vehicle Assembly Building, the awe-inspiring Apollo/Saturn V Center and the recently re-opened International Space Station Center. Visit the Visitor Complex with live action theatrical shows and educational Astronaut Encounter briefing. View the Rocket Garden, walk through a full-size Space Shuttle mock-up, enjoy IMAX Theater space films and see an actual Gemini program capsule on display. For an extra special addition to the day, you will have Lunch with an Astronaut which offers an up close and personal opportunity to share in the excitement of space exploration through the eyes and personal stories of one of NASA’s best all while enjoying a buffet meal. You can ask questions, have photos taken with the Astronaut and receive an autographed picture of the featured Astronaut.

Due to heightened security, the following items are not permitted into Kennedy Space
Center, coolers, luggage or large bags, firearms, pepper/mace spray, knives and other sharp objects.
Backpacks are not permitted on launch days. Detailed searches will be conducted on all bags and purses.

On this adventure you will experience various eco-systems including the deep forest, ancient oceans, and the endangered gopher tortoises. Take an easy 45-minute walk off this desert sand ridge onto the floor of an ancient ocean, then into dense woods and rekindle your senses! Experience three distinct, Florida eco-systems -- xeric scrub, mesic, and hydric hammocks. After your nature walk in the forest, head west to the St. Johns River. Certified as the greatest estuary of national importance, the endangered Indian River Lagoon contains over 5,000 species of plants and animals including the manatees and a huge assortment of wildlife. Cruise the inland waters around the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge where you will see and hear dolphins talking through the 49-passenger pontoon boat’s “Hydro-Phone.” This is the only tour in Florida where you can actually hear the dolphins talking to each other over the ship’s speaker system.
