Certification Preparation Workshops

Math Review for Certification Exams

1 Day / 0.7 CEUs

An Intensive one-day review of essential math skills. This course is specifically designed for those preparing for certification examination (ASP, CSP, OHST, who need a hands-on review of the following essential skill areas: conversions, dimensional analysis, number manipulation, shapes and formulae, graphing, algebra and trigonometry). Operation of scientific calculator is also included.

Learning Objectives:

  • Conversions - SI and English conversions of mass, length, and time
  • Dimensional analysis - multi-step conversions (e.g., converting miles per hour to feet per second, pounds to micrograms)
  • Number manipulation - exponents, scientific notation, significant digits, answer accuracy, and rounding and logarithms
  • Shapes and formulae - area, circumference, and volume of rectangles, triangles, circles, trapezoids, cubes, and cylinders
  • Graphing - two dimensional graphing of linear, exponential, trigonometric, and logarithmic functions
  • Algebra - laws and concepts, word problems
  • Trigonometry - right angles, trig functions, and word problems
ASP Examination Preparation Workshop: Safety Fundamentals

3 Days / 2.1 CEUs

This three-day review course is designed for those preparing for the Board of Certified Safety Professional (BCSP) Safety Fundamentals Examination, which leads to the Associate Safety Professional (ASP) designation.

By popular demand, this workshop was created to help you prepare for the ASP Safety Fundamentals Examination through identification of your strengths and weaknesses for continued study. Participants will review more than 450 problems addressing all six sections covered by the exam. The cumulative passing rate for those who have taken the test after the workshop is nearly 90 percent.

How You Will Benefit:

  • Determine whether you are ready to attempt the Safety Fundamental Examination (Core)
  • Obtain answers to questions about Core Exam materials
  • Identify areas where additional preparation is needed
  • Become familiar with resources available to prepare for the exam
  • Learn about certification requirements and scoring procedures
  • Review content material in an informal environment utilizing a "testing" format, including an opportunity for discussion
  • Minimize "test shock" for those who have not taken an exam of this magnitude and importance for an extended period of time
CSP Examination Preparation Workshop

3 Days / 2.1 CEUs

This three-day course is designed to prepare individuals for BCSP's comprehensive practice examination. The primary distinction among the examination options is the four exam areas that are covered: engineering, management, applied sciences, and legal/regulatory and professional conduct/professional affairs. The course consists of lectures, sample problems, and discussions on various subjects to prepare the student for the exam. Pertinent reference materials are discussed to help students focus their studies in specific areas before sitting for the exam.

Learning Objectives:

  • Applying concepts of probability, statistics, and calculus
  • Engineering: safety and environmental, occupational health, fire protection
  • Applied sciences: physics, chemistry, life sciences, behavioral sciences
  • Applied management: principles, ergonomic analysis, risk management, workers' compensation
  • Legal/regulatory and professional affairs

Note: Students are asked to bring a scientific calculator to class, such as a TI-35X, TI-60X, TI-68, or equivalent. Scientific keys/functions include: standard deviation, permutations and combinations, factorial, log, correlation coefficient, and trigonometry.

Approximate weighting of subjects areas:

  • Engineering 30%
  • Management 35%
  • Applied Sciences 15%
  • Legal Reg. & Prof. Affairs 20%
Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST) Examination Preparation Workshop

How You Will Benefit:

  • Determine if you are ready to take the CHST exam
  • Identify areas where additional preparation is needed
  • Enhance your knowledge and job skills
  • Become familiar with OSHA regulations and safe work practices
Occupational Health & Safety Technologist (OHST) Examination Preparation Workshop

3 Days / 2.1 CEUs

This is a review course for those preparing for the Occupational Health and Safety Technologist Examination leading to the designation of Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST). This is a joint certification of the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). The exam is designed to recognize the expanding role of technologists in support of occupational health and safety.

How You Will Benefit: The workshop will help identify potential problem areas, recommend resources available to prepare for the exam, explain certification requirements and scoring procedures, review content material utilizing a "testing" format, and minimize "test shock" for those who have not taken a standardized examination for an extended period of time.
