Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is seeking feedback from OSH professionals on proposed updates to GRI 403: Occupational Health and Safety. "The standard is being revised to reflect internationally agreed best practice and to align with recent developments in occupational health and safety management and reporting practice, including the upcoming ISO 45001 standard," GRI explains. Improvements include greater emphasis on hazards and the application of the hierarchy of controls, improved methodologies for calculating injury and illness data, and new leading indicators that look at the extent to which workers are covered by management systems and have access to occupational health services.

The comment period is open through Oct. 9, 2017, and ASSE members are encouraged to review the standard and submit feedback. GRI is particularly interested in comments on these questions: Would you suggest changes to the proposed disclosures and reporting requirements? Will they be feasible and practical to implement? Will the data they produce be useful to you and the wide range of stakeholders? GRI is presenting webinars on the proposed standards on Aug. 16 and Sept. 26.

Center for Safety and Health Sustainability, which ASSE helped form in 2011, was a key influence behind GRI's creation of a working group to examine OHS performance indicators.
