ASSE Diversity Policy

The American Society of Safety Engineers () believes that commitment to principles of fairness and respect for all individuals helps create a climate favorable to the free and open exchange of ideas, the betterment of the Society, and the safety, health and environmental profession. The Society also believes that opportunities exist to grow the membership leaders of the Society through diversity. To achieve and maintain a diverse Society it is not only the right thing to do, but necessary to ensure a Society that effectively succeeds in accomplishing its mission and vision.

To achieve and maintain a diverse Society, the Society has adopted this policy with the following specific value statement:

  • We will encourage the ongoing equal opportunity for participation of all people within the Society without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, personal beliefs, age, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, or physical challenges. We will also foster a Society culture which values and responds to the rich diversity of its staff and members.

Goals of this Diversity Policy are as follows:

  • Maintain a multidimensional, diversified staff and membership reflective of the entire profession.
  • Encourage staff and volunteers to adopt an inclusive language and presentation style which positively reflects and supports the cultural diversity the Society strives to develop and maintain.
  • Develop and maintain programs to accommodate members with physical challenges.
  • Enhance the quality of member learning through the provision of culturally, socially, and gender inclusive education in areas such as publications, professional development offerings, and teaching methods.

The Society’s rationale to adopt such a policy is that our global Society will rely greatly on SH&E professionals to meet the rising changes and increasing responsibilities that face the SH&E profession. This policy will help the Society provide the technical support and leadership necessary to meet the challenges of a changing world. The ability of the profession to meet these challenges will require the full participation of all current and future members of the Society.
